Talk and the Letter

Chapter 13: Talk and the letter.

After the conversation between Ethan and Bella, they both retired to their homes feeling lighter. They had closed an important chapter in their lives, and although there were still traces of nostalgia, they knew that it was best to move on. The next morning, Bella had to head to school earlier than usual, since they had a scheduled field trip to a greenhouse. Upon arriving, Mike approached her, trying to start a casual conversation before asking the inevitable question:

—Hey, Bella... I was wondering if you wanted to go to the dance with me.

Bella, already anticipating the moment, smiled slightly and responded with an excuse he had prepared:

—Sorry, Mike, but I have plans to go to Jacksonville that weekend, I already have the tickets purchased.

Mike tried to hide his disappointment, but nodded with an awkward smile .

From afar, Edward watched the interaction. Upon hearing that Bella rejected the invitation, he couldn't help but smile a small smile, pleased with his decision. However, the smile quickly faded as his mind returned to the conversation he had overheard between Ethan and Bella the day before. A pang of jealousy washed over him, though he knew they were unwarranted feelings. They had both made it clear that they no longer felt the same way about each other, but Edward's inability to read his minds made him doubt. Not knowing with certainty what Bella was feeling deeply disconcerted him. Already in the greenhouse, while the students walked through the rows of plants, Edward approached Bella with a curious look:

—What's in Jacksonville? —She asked, as if Mike's rejection had rekindled her interest.

Bella looked at him in surprise before replying sarcastically:

—Floridians.

Edward gave a small smile, but the conversation didn't stop there. Bella's next question was direct and disconcerting:

—How could you stop that truck with just one arm?

Edward, knowing that this question would come at some point, responded with a predictable excuse:

—It was a volley of adrenalin. Just look it up on Google.

Bella looked at him, clearly not convinced, but decided not to press him any further.

The conversation flowed tensely until Edward abruptly changed the subject:

—The boy who visited you in Was the hospital your boyfriend? —He asked, his eyes fixed on Bella's.

Bella, surprised, took a while to respond. Ethan's name floated around in her mind, but she finally said firmly:

—Ethan? No, he's just a friend.

Edward heard the tone in her voice, detecting honesty in her words. He decided to believe her, although his jealousy was still present

After the field trip, on the way to the school buses, Edward seemed distant. Finally, he turned to Bella and said in a serious tone:

—I think it would be best if we weren't friends.

Bella looked at him confused, and before she could respond, Edward continued somewhat coldly:

—It's the best for both of us.

Bella, frustrated, replied:

—Then why did you save me? Do you regret having done it?

Edward looked at her with contained fury:

—You don't understand anything. You don't know me.

Without saying more, they got on different buses, leaving the conversation unfinished and full of tension.

Change of perspective: Ethan

While Bella attended his excursion, Ethan was mentally preparing himself for what could be a crucial day. The previous afternoon, after saying goodbye to Bella, he had stopped by the Forks courier and written an impromptu letter, addressed to Rosalie. Just waiting for a response had him nervous. The message in the letter, although brief, carried with it all his desire to meet her:

"Rosalie, I'm Ethan. I know this may seem a little rushed, but I would like to meet today at noon at the edge of our borders. territories. I would love to talk to you in person."

After sending the letter, he had spent the rest of the sleepless night, wondering if Rosalie would attend or, worse yet, ignore him completely.

Shift of Perspective: Rosalie

Rosalie was overwhelmed by the events of the previous day. She couldn't stop thinking about the conversation she had overheard between Bella and Ethan at the hospital. The thought that Bella had been with Ethan before he even met her filled her with a mixture of jealousy and resentment. However, upon further reflection on the situation, she realized how irrational those feelings were. At that time, Ethan didn't know about the existence of vampires, much less about her.

He decided that there was no point in going to school that day, knowing that the others had a field trip. He had no desire to follow them to a greenhouse. Just when he was about to stay home, the doorbell rang, and when he opened the door, he met a delivery man who handed him a letter. Intrigued, he opened it and what he read shocked her. It was an invitation from Ethan.

It was 11:15 and the appointment was scheduled for noon. Time was slipping away. Without a second thought, Rosalie ran to get ready, her heart pounding as she prepared to meet the boy who had been haunting her thoughts incessantly.
