Mal and I had our hands tied up in rope as we followed the knights on foot while they rode on top of their horses. One of the guards, walking on foot, caught up to us and asked me "Why would you do it?"
I looked over at the scrawny boy *He looks familiar* "Do what?" I asked
"Why did you kill the prince? I mean, you had the perfect life in the castle. Why would you give all that up?" He asked
"I may have had a good life while living in that castle, but at the price of my safety? No way" I replied
He looked down and said "Yeah. I understand. Remember that one mission we went on together?"
*Now I remember! He was the boy who carried the Captain back to the castle*
"Yes. I remember. You've changed" I said
"I would think so. I was only to stay a guard for a year. But my family was killed in an accident so I had nowhere to go but to stay at the castle" he said angrily
"I'm guessing that the accident wasn't an accident," Mal said. He had overheard everything since he was so close to us.
The guard shook his head and said "No. I'm pretty sure that it was the king who ordered that accident"
"Why though?" Mal asked
"So that he wouldn't leave." I said "There are secrets in the castle and if the public gets word of them then the king is done for. Guards talk and the best way to keep them quiet is to keep them close"
"Do you know what those secrets are?" Mal asked
The guard brightened and asked "If you know then you should share them with the public. With their help we can finally get rid of the king."
I hesitated before answering "Even if we do manage to get rid of the king. Who would take up the spot?"
"The next in line is the princess. Believe it or not, when she's not obsessing over you, she's actually a really good leader. I'm sure she will be a good queen." The guard said
"How are we going to escape? What about the guards?" Mal asked and looked around towards the guards
One of the other guards looked at us and said "Don't worry. Most of us want to help you kick the king off the throne. We hate him"
"It's settled then. We leave towards the village and gather as many supporters as we can" I said
The guards let us go but they couldn't come back with us because they would attract unwanted attention from the other guards.
We walked towards the village where there would be more people at the time.
Someone stopped and pointed at us "Hey! Weren't they from the wanted posters? The one with blonde hair! He's the villain!"
A guard stared at us for a solid minute and came at us. I didn't have time to think, so I acted. Literally.
"He is not the villain!" I screamed "I am!"
Mal looked over at me like I was crazy and said "No. You're not! Stop pretending. You're the hero!"
"Like hell I am." I got down on my knees while holding my hands up in the air dramatically. Tears streaming down my face. "Let me live my life!!!"
Damn. I can put on a really good show.
Mal grabbed my hand while the guard had stopped in confusion and pulled me into a dark alleyway.
I turned towards Mal and said "We should stick to the shadows."
"Yep" he agreed
We made it to the center of the vaige. I got on top of a stool and yelled "Ahem! May I please have a few minutes of your time!"
A few people stopped and pointed (Because of the wanted posters I'm guessing) but many walked past.
"It's about your queen and the real reason she died!" I yelled
This got everyone's attention. The queen may not have wanted the title of 'queen' but she sure did gain the love of the entire village. Everyone was devastated when she died.
"The king ordered an assassin to kill her! After she had her son she was murdered. After she was murdered, the king abused her son, Sebastian, his entire life!"
Everyone was shocked but most of all, outraged.
"I can't believe it" "Out with the king!" "A life for a life!" "No more king!"
The villagers who had gathered have now become an angry mob. The few guards that had come to see the commotion had joined the mob after hearing the truth.
They marched towards the castle and demanded the king to come out.
"Do you think we overdid it?" I whispered to Mal
The king came out and yelled "All of you only liked that wench for her money!"
"Nope." He whispered back
The villagers started attacking the king. The king, who was surrounded by guards, was betrayed by said guards and was killed on the spot.
"Down with the king!" "No more king!"
The crowd chanted and cheered.
*No more king, indeed*
A FEW MONTHS LATER
"Congratulations on your coronation, Charlotte" I told the queen
She smiled and said "I should thank you. If I had known about Sebastian, I would have acted faster"
I laughed and said "Thankfully it's all in the past."
Charlotte looked at me shyly and asked "I still need a king, you know."
I hugged my husband and said "Yeah. What a shame"
She shrugged "It's a habit to try at this point"
Mal and I had gotten married a month after the king had been killed. We had a good relationship with the villain and got along with Charlotte. It's weird how much everything turned out differently from the original book. But I'm much happier with this ending.
