Chapter Sixty-two

"Pregnant? ", Jay found himself saying and the doctor replied, "Just saying, it's under probability but I suggest you take her for some test ", he had said before leaving. Thirty minutes later, Jay Martins found himself sitting down and staring at Bella. Could it be that she was actually pregnant for him? how would she react if he suggested a pregnancy test?.  He remembered her reaction after their first intercourse and also how for some reasons she had forgotten. She probably did not remember the pills and at such, he knew that she would definitely freak out should he mention the possibility of a pregnancy. He began wondering about himself, whether he was ready to embrace her and the baby? she was weak and in his empire, there was no room for weak people. He needed a strong woman to stand by him, not some whimpering child and thus, he needed to discharge her as soon as possible. It was not her, he was the problem, he was scared but then, he felt she was not mentally capable to welcome his world. Few months ago, he would have been pleased to harness her, but thinking about it now more critically, he felt like he had rushed into this without giving it a second thought, whether or not she was fit to adjust to him. She looked peaceful asleep while he kept watching her, never shifting his gaze even for a second, he began feeling guilty all over again. What was wrong with him, why was he so indecisive. He began to feel pain from watching her with such thoughts in his mind so he took out his phone. He unblocked a number he had locked a long time ago, dialed it. "Are you free? ", he asked and listened, "Alright, let's meet at the restaurant behind my work place ", he said. Taking his keys, he gave instructions that Bella be checked on and drove off. He knew he was making a mistake but then, he needed somewhere to cool off with. 

Bella woke up feeling much better, whatever had happened must have taken its toll on her and she had no idea how long it had been, "You're awake, I'll bring your food now ", an excited Katherine was saying as she made for the door. Bella was still feeling hazy and so, when the excited maid returned wheeling in a food tray, she asked, "What happened Kath? ", and the girl explained to her what had happened, "Where is Jay? ", she asked when she heard that Jay had been there. "Oh, Mr Martins stepped out, he asked that we tend to you ", she explained and Bella felt disappointed. When he had been ill, she watched over him, swooned over him and cared for him. But then, in her time, he felt free enough to go out. She would not mind, she quietly ate her meal. Katherine watched her all through quietly, and when she was done, she cleared the dishes. Bella was undressing when she returned, "What really happened Bella? ", Katherine asked her searching for answers, Bella did not know whether or not to confide in the girl, so she hesitated. After a second thought, she decided to speak, "My mom is down with cancer ", she said and the shock was evident in the maid's eyes, "Oh I'm so sorry Bella, I understand what you must be going through ", she said, "No you don't Katherine, I've spent half my life hating on her, I never knew she was dying. I feel so guilty ", she said and started sobbing, Katherine hurried to console her, " It's okay dear, my only brother died of cancer and he was my best friend and buddy ", Katherine was sa. She spent a lot of time consoling Bella, and when she was sure that her friend was stable enough, she went to conclude her duties for the night. Bella tidied up, and when Katherine had finished her activities and also tidied up, she joined Bella. They talked, played scrabble which Katherine had pulled out of the store and then, they slept. She slept in with Bella. Bella felt the weight of the world removed from her shoulders, she did need a friend to confide in after all. Jay did not return that night and she barely noticed his absence. She did not need him and his bossy self around her. 

The next morning, it was during breakfast that Jay Martins returned. Bella was in the dining area having her breakfast when he came in. She chose to ignore him and that probably punctured his ego and probably pricked his already guilt stricken conscience. He moved over to the dining and sat down opposite her, "How are you feeling? ", he asked her and she gave him a simple nod signifying that she was okay. "Care to tell me what yesterday was all about? ", he asked her searching for answers, she spoke after an after thought, "My mother is down with cancer and I need to see her ", she said without emotions, he felt pierced. He had blamed her for nothing and abandoned her previously, Jay asked her, "How bad is it? We could take her... ",he was saying, about to suggest taking her to a better hospital, "She dying. She terminally ill ", Bella said cutting him short. She was determined to end the conversation with him, there was a strange aura of guilt about him and she was not comfortable with it, she just wanted him out of her sight. On his part, Jay could feel her slipping away, he wanted nothing more but to make it up to her, he wanted her forgiveness without directly asking for it so he decided to grant her wish, "When do you want to go see her? ", he asked her and she said, "As soon as possible ". He was not okay with this, last night he had made a mistake with his decision, after that, this morning, he had been asking himself if it had been worth it but the answer coming to him was that he had fucked up big time. Bella would never forgive him if she discovered what he had done, and he was determined to keep it far from her as much as possible.
