Chapter Four

He logged into the international music artistic database to search for more information for his lecture notes. His recent interest in the lute and its sophisticated history was a little bit off-curriculum. He had lost somebody, she wasn't dead, at least. He, however, believed he could get some closure from looking into the subject.

Mr. Gold had an affliction for always minding his business. He first heard about the Lutein society when he transferred to Stan's school. They were a group of romantics who believed in the symphonic rhythm the Lute could create, thereby, arousing an inner satisfaction for its participants.

When Rachel left him, he felt lost at first. And then he found the Lutanists, or maybe fanatics of the Lute and its music. It was an abrupt separation after five years together. She thought he was way over his head with his studies leaving little or no room for her and her desires. She had given him enough time to propose; to no avail. Mr. Gold tried to explain from his end. He wasn't ready yet. He needed time to settle his many interests, if she could just wait for a few more years. That was a lot to ask from a woman, who was in her early thirties. She threw in the towel at the end, she opted to scout somewhere else, on friendly grounds. Good luck Rachel, were the pleasantries he could not utter…he later admitted, because, he loved her so much.

The database he logged into was filled with sections and sections of music history…ideally this was essential for enriching his knowledge about music, but he was interested in information concerning Lutes. The information on his interest suggested that the Lute and its craft had been out of active practice/use for a while, with past Lute Players being prehistoric and thus of great value and few in contemporary times.

He aspired to be a Lutanist… a longing he had developed. Maybe to replace Rachel and the happy nights they had together. It could help in a way.

But little did he know he wasn't alone in this venture. He was in a battle, of a sort, a two-edged sword fight with destiny and his protégé-student.
