The prison's food was definitely bad.
Breakfast consisted of a bowl of watery porridge, a steamed bun, and some pickles.
Lunch and dinner were always steamed buns and boiled vegetables—mostly cabbage—without meat, and it was rather bland. It was hard to swallow.
Some of their families would send in other foodstuffs to supplement their diet.
