The 2nd is parts of the people who got pulled to the sky or down to the ground suddenly teleported across the Earth's crust. It was possible for people who were in China before the Shattering to appear in Africa when the phenomenon subsided suddenly.
This displaced almost the entire population from the world they knew. Suddenly having to deal with people of different races, cultures, religions, and backgrounds, the people initially had plenty of problems with no way of knowing where everyone was and no way to communicate globally. The people of Earth suddenly felt alone.
Cain's group was from Canada, while Abel was from Italy. However, both ended in the deserts of the middle east. Luckily by design, people gained the ability to speak all languages. Meaning even if, in truth, the people were beside you were saying in Latin, post-Shattering humans would be able to understand the meaning and feeling behind the phrases even without knowing a single Latin word.
