Chapter 24

Another hour of lecture. There were very difficult tests at the end, so he made sure to keep notes in his phone about all the snakes the professor had talked about. He wondered if they had snakes in the cultivation world, but did not dwell on it very long. He had already gotten a monsterdex when he was little, but it didn't say anything about how to deal with the monsters he scanned.

Monsterdexs were similar to phones, except their only use was to scan monsters and find their stats and skills, even if it wasn't 100% accurate it would be worth it to at least have an idea. Class felt like it went by so fast, and he only had two more courses as he couldn't take advanced classes or specialized classes until second semester or hit level 10. The next class was his combat class. Probably the most important class for him as it was made to grant exp as well as proper instructors. The class had everyone spread out in a massive area. The fifty students were in a coliseum with a hundred yard diameter, so there was plenty of room.

"Students, remember to always be ready for combat. Always."

He pulled a lever and monsters began pouring out of the doors. Most of them were small boars, but there was also a king bour. Jake scanned it with his monsterdex, they were rated as level 2-10. This meant that they were equivalent to an adventurer of the same level. The king bour were at level 10 and the small ones were about level 3, so Jake had no issues. He had flame spear level 3 with a 25% bonus effectiveness and 43 magic stat points, which could kill boars like this in one hit if he used mana instead of ki.

"This is just a starting test, so kill as many as you can so I know how much work I have to do."

Professor James loved giving surprise fights, and ever since the ban of stat checking in schools he could do it any time as a "test." He wasn't mean or sadistic, but he wanted to see the fighting styles of his students. Jaylen was also in this class, so she had summoned her few skeletons to fight for her. She used a boar that was already dead to cast bone weapon so her summons got swords made of its bones.

Jake threw a flame spear and easily took out one of the boars. Some students were struggling, but with his flame claws at level two Jake could easily defend himself and take them out, making his main goal to go for the king monster. He used his electric bracelet to launch himself high in the air, expanding the claws in his hands and dug them into the king's side. It let out a massive howl in pain and it was penetrated by solid concentrated flame from Jake's hand. He wasn't the only one attacking it, but due to the boar's vitality of over 50 the array of magic and weapons it was hit with weren't very effective.

It tried to shake Jake off, but after using his second claw to dig in it started to fall over. It wasn't quite dead, but after shoving a fire spear into its heart it finally died with one last squeal.

He had used quite a bit of mana to take it out, but being only 50 EXP from leveling up he wanted to take out a few more before all the monsters were gone. He threw another two spears to take out another two boars, then using one he made of ki to block then stab another one of the kings. The skeletons that Jaylen had created were also attacking, so when it finally fell to the consistent attacks from the two of them, he got only a portion of the EXP.

The rest of the boars were taken out shortly after. The entire thing only lasted about 5 minutes, but it was enough for the professor to see who was eager to fight, and who wasn't interested in it. The group was quite diverse, with all types of class. He saw Jake pretty quickly due to his raw stats and the power of his skills, but was a lot more interested in the people who had more potential, as stats could only carry someone so far before being outdone by strong skills.

"Good, now that that's done we can get on with the lesson. The first thing you should all master is the skill battle focus. It keeps the mind clear headed in the face of combat, and even though a lot of you don't seem to need it, if anyone uses a fear skill or any kind of brain enchantment you can't resist it."

'Shit'

That was the only thing Jake thought upon hearing this. Battle focus wasn't a skill he could get, so he would have to find another way to gain resistance to mental effects before whatever test the professor had planned.

"Remember to always focus on nothing but the fight. A misstep will often lead to death when fighting strong monsters, so keep your ears and eyes open at all times. The second test is going to be a blind challenge, make it to the edge of the arena without your sight or getting hit by the arrows, and you will get a reward. No worries if you don't, you will have more chances."

He placed his hand on the ground and it began to shake. Outside of a small platform for each student the entire floor fell down by almost 15 feet. A blinding spell was cast over all the students, and almost instantly a few students fell. Jake was able to keep balance pretty easily, but without his sight he would just have to take hits.
