Chapter 48: Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna

The doorbell rang as Ritu washed the dishes after dinner. Leaving the plates in the sink, her hands wet and soapy, she hurried to open the door.

She smiled at him. "Look who's here."

Sameer stepped inside with his lopsided smile.

"Where's Aayush?" he asked after her, as she went back to the kitchen.

"At my parents' place. Lohri celebrations in the colony," she shouted over the sound of water rinsing her hands.

She came back and sat next to him on the tan faux leather sofa. This was the first time Sameer had come home since Kavita's death. He seemed to have lost some weight; he looked fit in wine-red pullover and dark trousers.

There was strangeness between them, as they sat stiffly, their limbs not touching. His eyes were on an addition to the wall of masks. A brass mask of the Sun God, little rays sticking out of a serene round face. She followed his eyes and smiled. "Neena brought it from Orissa."
