I would see if Pat was in. I knew she didn’t mind people just showing up, so I didn’t phone her in advance. Pat should be home. She worked from home—barely successful as a lawyer; she was capable, but she just didn’t hustle to get clients—and she just plain liked being at home, watching television or hanging out with the multitude of friends and acquaintances who routinely dropped in.

I wanted Pat’s opinions on the Tarot card reading. If nothing else, if she dismissed such things as nonsense, I would feel reassured.

I buzzed her from the lobby of her building, and she answered. And when I arrived at her door, she said, “Glendon just left. You missed him.”
