It's Just A Game

~•Amara•~

"Aren't you the team's quarterback? Why are you not practicing then?" Scrunching my eyebrows together, I questioned him. Since I was trying my best to fit among these fools, it was better to do it with perfection. And the man before me was a perfect start for it. 'At least it will make the old man proud of me, or a little happy for a short while.' Keeping the same thought in my mind, I decided to act humane, for once.

"Yes, I am. But yours truly here don't need practice." I saw him smirking at me as he answered my question.

"Isn't someone being too proud?" Raising my delicate eyebrows at him, I scoffed. He surely was being too full of himself. How could a team's quarterback have enough practice? Aren't they supposed to be striving harder each time they reach the pinnacle of their own best?

"Trust me, I am the best at what I do. I already had some practice yesterday, so some warm up before tomorrow's game will be enough." The corners of his lips tugged upwards as he passed me a polite smile.

"You have a game tomorrow?" I couldn't help but ask him as a friend marred my forehead. How did I not know about it? With how much Dana was rambling on and on about things going on campus every time she stepped inside our room, how did she not mention this? Or maybe she did, but I couldn't quite catch it. The hell was going on with my mind. After reading that weird book which was still resting peacefully in my backpack, it was going haywire.

I felt something move before me which brought me back to the present and a low, confused hum left my lips. Blinking my eyes a couple of times, I regained my focus only to realize that a hand was moving back and forth right before my eyes.

"I asked you something. What are you looking at?" He followed my line of sight only to be graced by a couple of tall trees standing proudly in the distance. "Wow! You were staring at absolutely nothing." I heard him say with an amused expression which only forced me to roll my eyes.

"I am sorry, I was just thinking about something. What were you saying?" I asked him as I tried to shift the topic back to him. Being the center of attention or any topic, never settled well with me.

"I was just saying it will be good if you can come to watch tomorrow's game? I mean if you do come, I can introduce you to my teammates. That way you can get to know more people." He scratched the back of his neck and repeated his words from earlier which I couldn't catch.

"I-I don't do well with crowds." The frown on my forehead was back the very moment I heard his words. Crowds and me, never went along. For some unknown reason I preferred solitude. Not because of the loneliness, but rather the peace it provided me.

"Oh, come on! It's just a game. You don't even have to sit in the stands. I will make sure you get your own seat with the team and the coach. And that's the best seat in the house." He pursed her lips in a side pout and gave me a pitiful look, only making things harder for me. If I would have said no to his humble offer, it would only make me look bad.

"Umm… okay." I gave into his pleas, scolding my own self internally. Why did I have to act polite and humble before the man? Did I just shoot my own foot? It indeed seemed like it when I saw his pitiful expression being replaced by a joyful one.

"I know you won't regret saying yes to me." He gave a full giga-watt smile as he showed off his pearly white teeth which were more than perfectly aligned. But the small brown piece stuck between his upper two central teeth was a sore sight to the eyes. I hated myself for being so observant, but it was a part of my heightened senses, came with the package of who I was. I could help doing it unconsciously.

"Have I got something stuck in my teeth?" His words made me shift my gaze back to his eyes and I apologized for my absent mindedness once again.

"Oh, no! I am sorry that I keep dazing out. Didn't have a good sleep last night." I gave him a forced smile as I tried to save myself from humiliation. 'As if you even sleep.' My subconscious chose the right time to mock my words. It wasn't like he needed to know about it.

"Happens at times. You better have some proper rest tonight because tomorrow will be tiring for you. Especially if we manage to win the game." He shrugged his shoulders at my pathetic excuse. I liked the fact that he didn't share the same pestering nature like other humans. It only made it easier for me to converse with him.

"For what reason?" I asked him. For some weird reason I wanted to keep the conversation going on since our P.E teacher wasn't in sight.

"If we manage to win the game, there's definitely going to be an after party for celebrating our win. And it will be bigger than the usual ones because the team we will be playing against tomorrow is our rival college who manages to beat us at every other game except for football." He patiently answered my question as his hands slid inside the front pockets of his jeans.

"So, that's why they are working so hard." I pointed my chin towards the football field. "You guys want to maintain your winning streak at football, right?" I kept my gaze on him this time, only to see him nod. Just as I was about to wish him good luck for the match, a familiar cawing sound entered my ears. Before I could even turn my head around to look at my favorite pet, a slight splash followed the the loud caws which rendered me speechless.
