From what I know, wyverns are separated into many different clans based on their attributes. Flame wyvern, wind wyverns and even dark wyverns. There were records of all of them.
It was a time where humans weren't the dominating race in Eval, during that age, high ranking mana beasts like wyverns and dragons roamed the world freely with their giant bodies and enormous lifespans, conquering all land.
But suddenly, something happened. The records didn't say exactly what, but anyone could tell that something had to have happened for them to stop ruling the world.
As I peered through the countless books and old papers in the mansion library, I managed to find holes in history, and one of the biggest ones were the disappearances of such ancient creatures.
It can't be that one day they all just decided to not exist right?
But that's a thought for another time. For now, I'm facing off against one of these ancient beasts.
Sharp blue eyes that could pierce anyone with a glance. Huge, white scales that covered its enormous body. There were ice spikes sticking out of the gaps on its body and tail. The sight alone could easily terrify anyone who dared lay eyes on such a creature.
This guy is an ice wyvern. An ice wyvern king.
"Demonic art 17: Tempest fall."
[WRYYYYYYY!]
The wyvern cried out in pain as the back of my right foot connected with its head, pushing it towards the ground and causing the surrounding ground to vibrate intensely.
[SWOOSH!]
It hastily lifted its tail and curled it forward like a scorpion ready to attack. Small but fast ice spikes were sent flying directly at me without a moment's notice.
I extended my right hand and blocked them all with a protection spell whilst being pushed back by the force of the attack.
That was actually pretty dangerous. Those things looked like regular ice spikes, but in actuality I could sense deep and highly condensed mana coming from each and every one of them.
If it landed on any regular mage, they would they dead immediately without even knowing what happened.
[WRYYYYYY!]
As the wyvern king lifts its head, an intimidating roar imbued with anger and mana rushes out of its mouth, blowing the debris lying around and making them fly backwards.
I put up my arms to block the arduous and chilly winds that came from its cry and stand there unfazed.
[WRYYYY!]
The wyvern king roars in exasperation once again as it lifts its head, staring down at me.
Oh. Is it going to use "that" now?
The wyvern opened its mouth wide, and from a distance, I could see a ball of white and blue energy forming in its mouth. I could use this short time frame to attack while its charging "it" up, but where would the fun be in that?
Maybe it's been so long since I challenged such a high ranking creature that I couldn't contain my excitement.
I ready myself by locking my feet firmly to the ground while gazing at the creature with narrowed eyebrows and a huge smirk on my face.
You are probably wondering what I'm so excited about right? Of course I'm referring to the wyvern's breath! Just like dragons, it's their signature move!
"Come on, hit me with your best attack!"
I say with a huge grin on my face.
[RARRRR!]
Just before the beam hit me, I could hear a shout and scream from a distance.
"ROLAN!"
Oh that was Lyndis.
A beam of white and blue shot out from the wyvern king's mouth, and the next thing I know I'm enveloped with light blue energy.
But this...this doesn't feel too bad. How do I put it? It's a lot weaker than expected.
Sure the temperature is negative something degrees but other than that, the energy emanating from it doesn't seem particularly strong. Is this guy really a wyvern king?
I feel that this attack could barely pass as a wyvern's attack, let alone a wyvern king.
Oh? It finally stopped.
As the beam reduced itself, the only thing that was revealed was me standing there with my right arm extended to protect myself from the beam of energy.
My clothes, arms, legs, body, everything was fine. There wasn't even so much as a scratch on my body. I had perfectly blocked the wyvern's breath perfectly.
My surrounding environments however, were completely filled with ice and snow as though a blizzard had just blew through. Everything around me was blown to smithereens and is covered in a layer of steam because of the intensive cold energy that came in contact with the surrounding atmosphere.
"WHAT?! HE'S FINE?"
Once again Lyndis.
The wyvern instinctively steps back as a response to my perfect defense.
"Is that all?"
I breathed out a sigh of disappointment as I let my demonic aura wrap around me. I thought that a wyvern's attack would be stronger, but I guess not.
At that moment my entire aura stretched, covering the surrounding area in black and turning the atmosphere heavier than it already was. My original clothes were no where to be seen, in their place were jet black clothing and a robe covering it all.
I released my right hand, prompting Blade to take shape.
"This was such a bore."
[WRYYYYYYYYYYYYY!]
The wyvern shouted louder than ever, delivering attacks left right and center. But it doesn't matter. Which each swing of my jet black sword, I dispel one of its attacks. And just like that, I am slowly walking up to it without taking any damage.
The wyvern continues to attack like a cornered rat.
"If you got any other tricks you better showcase them now."
So I say sternly while looking directly into the wyverns eyes.
In that instant, it shoots backwards, snapping the branches of the back trees and knocking a few of them over. It propels itself even further backwards and creates a trail of destruction in its path.
"Running huh. What a nice move."
I launch myself forward to chase the wyvern and get ready to strike.
"Demonic art 42: Hellfire rose."
[SWOOSH!]
The sword whistles while travelling through the air and finds itself on the other side of the wyvern's neck. Moment's later, a burst of flames erupted in a shape of a flower on the wyvern's neck and travel down its body, killing it in the process.
[THUMP!]
The heavy sound of a body and head dropping fill the air as I silently descend, not making a single sound at all.
"Hah. So weak."
I flick Blade in an attempt to get all the blood of it and recede it back into my shadow while turning around to glance at the dead beast behind me.
So their blood is red as well.
I thought it would be blue or something, seeing as it is an ice wyvern.
As I closed in on the large head oozing a scarlet liquid, I couldn't help but remember something important.
"AHHHH!"
Shit. I was supposed to kill it without damaging the scales.
Truthfully, I made this trip to Etelia for three reasons. First is to recruit the dark elves. Second is to fight the wyvern. And third is to collect the body of the wyvern to experiment on it.
After all, it's not everyday you get to see a high ranking mana beast. The scales on wyverns are especially precious. This was really valuable material for me.
I could have used it to craft weapons for the four pillars.
But now? The scales are all burnt up and blackish.
"Hah."
I guess I just couldn't contain my anger after realizing the wyvern king was this weak.
Hmm?
Just before I was about to call my fellow companions over to take a look at the dead beast, I noticed something off about the body.
"It's corroding?"
"That's weird."
I placed my hand on a scale and run mana through it to get a better understanding of the situation.
"This is?!"
A curse. A very strong and profound curse. Possibly from ancient times.
In that moment, everything became clear to me. Why the wyvern was in Etelia. Why it wasn't using its gigantic wings to fly away and instead chose to propel itself backwards to escape. And why it wasn't as strong as I initially thought it would be.
All of it made sense once I touched the body of the giant winged creature.
