Chapter 108: Magical Script

The holidays are always delightful, bringing joy to both the body and mind.

This is especially true for students.

Despite the annoying holiday assignments that need to be completed, they couldn't dampen Albert's good mood.

In fact, Albert had already finished all his unfinished homework at lightning speed on the day before Christmas break.

A holiday without holiday assignments was undoubtedly enjoyable.

During the Christmas break, Albert could sleep in late in the mornings, have a meal, and then lie on the sofa watching TV for a while. When bored, he could play with the cat, listen to music, chat with Nia, play chess, or sit by the fireplace and savor a book.

However, just after Christmas, Albert found something that interested him. After the local library reopened, he went there to search for records related to the Rune alphabet.

This came about because a while ago he had bought a book called "Introduction to Ancient Magical Scripts" and had put in a lot of effort to finish reading it. However, his skill panel didn't show any skills related to ancient magical scripts.

Albert thought this situation was similar to alchemy, so he decided to deepen his knowledge of the Rune alphabet by reading more related books and mastering it.

As for waiting until the third grade to take the elective course on ancient magical scripts? Albert didn't have the patience to wait two and a half years. After all, he was a man with a skill panel, and once the relevant skill appeared, the subsequent problems would become much simpler.

There were very few records about the Rune alphabet in the library, but Albert still found some related records in Germanic mythology:

The Rune alphabet, also known as the Futhark, originated from Germanic mythology and was associated with Odin, the famous father of the gods. It is said that Odin traded one of his eyes for knowledge of the Runes. (The word "Rune" itself carries the meaning of "mystery".)

Odin belongs to Germanic mythology, and the Rune alphabet belongs to the Germanic language. And when it comes to Germanic people, the first thing Albert thinks of is Germans.

Yes, that's right, the conservative Germans. German is evolved from the Germanic language.

However, there is one problem!

Albert vaguely remembers that J.K. Rowling, the author of Harry Potter, used a lot of Latin when designing spells. However, Latin and Germanic languages belong to two different language families.

Albert never considered himself an archaeologist, let alone a language expert. He never thought about solving these confusing questions. He chose to record his doubts and perhaps, as he gained more knowledge about the Rune alphabet, the doubts would automatically be resolved.

Later, Albert did find a connection between the two in the library: After the disappearance of the Rune alphabet, the Germanic language started using some Latin letters.

This explains why Latin letters are used in both the UK and Germany, despite being classified under the Germanic language.

After spending several days on it, Albert figured out a bit about why Hogwarts offers an elective course in Ancient Magical Scripts.

Germanic mythology originated from the Scandinavian Peninsula, which is present-day Sweden.

Based on Albert's research on the Germanic language, the languages of Denmark, Norway, and Iceland, which are near Sweden, are all derived from the Germanic language and belong to North Germanic.

On the other hand, Old English originated from Anglo-Saxon Fraktur, which belongs to West Germanic, i.e., the Rune alphabet.

Later on, probably due to religious reasons, a large number of Latin letters were introduced. Latin had a significant influence on the whole of Europe. Albert thought this might be one of the reasons for the disappearance of the Rune alphabet.

However, one thing cannot be denied: the Rune alphabet possesses magic. Ancient magical objects are often engraved with this ancient script to enhance their magical power.

Albert believes this is related to the Rune Stone, which was famous in the magical world in his previous life.

Although many things are based on his speculation, Albert still enjoys it. He explores these ancient scripts, touches and tries to learn to identify them and understand their meaning.

After researching a lot of materials, Albert found that records in the Muggle world were very limited.

To address this, Albert wrote a letter to Durmstrang and, following their suggestion, purchased "The Pronunciation of Magical Letters" and "The Dictionary of Magical Scripts" from Flourish and Blotts.

Compared to the Muggle world, the magical world has a better understanding of the Rune alphabet. After all, this thing originally belonged to the mysterious side.

During the following vacation, Albert spent a lot of time trying to decipher the Rune alphabet. It was a difficult task, but his efforts eventually paid off. His skill panel finally displayed a skill called "Magical Script." Although it was slightly different from what he had imagined, Albert used his experience pool to level up this skill to level 1.

Soon, he realized that he could barely understand the Rune alphabet. The feeling was extraordinary, and he could vaguely sense the magical charm of ancient magical scripts.

Albert continued to invest experience into "Magical Script." After reaching level 2, he found that he could understand and comprehend most of the Rune alphabet without relying on "The Pronunciation of Magical Letters" and "The Dictionary of Magical Scripts." He could even read them aloud.

This was a very interesting thing. Albert's mastery of the Rune alphabet through his skill panel was undoubtedly correct, and when he reexamined "The Pronunciation of Magical Letters" and "The Dictionary of Magical Scripts" based on his own understanding, he could find some interesting errors.

Words, at times, cannot be accurately represented in another language, and errors are inevitable.

Especially for those Rune stones with religious connotations, most interpretations are somewhat incorrect.

In the symbolic meaning, application of magic, function of spell notation, and interpretation of divination, the Rune alphabet can differ to some extent.

Once these things are mixed up, the resulting outcome will deviate.

After mastering the Rune alphabet, Albert became passionate about finding discrepancies and recording mistranslations.

Later on, Albert began to design and study the magical uses of the Rune script, focusing on amulets that had been neglected before. However, before he could finish working on the Rune script for the amulets, the Christmas break came to an end.

On the day before the start of the new term, Albert boarded the Express train to return to Hogwarts.

As he expected, Fred and George didn't make the garlic crosses, but they secretly brought a string of garlic from home, and Lee Jordan was no exception.

Looking at the pile of garlic in front of him, Albert's eyelid twitched. He thought the three of them had forgotten about this.

"Have you finished your holiday homework?" Albert changed the subject. He really didn't want to dwell on the garlic issue any longer.

"Oh, just a little bit left," said Lee Jordan as he ate a pumpkin pie. "I'll go to the library to find some references, and I'll be done soon."

"We're all set on our end," the twins said in unison.

"Copying each other's work?" Albert saw through their trick at a glance.

"No, it's called inspiration."

Lee Jordan snorted disdainfully and continued eating.
