The Dark Paths

"humans~" "your race has been given the opportunity to prove yourselves worthy, do not disappoint us" Across the earth billions simultaneously heard this voice within their heads. On this day 10% of those between the ages of 16 and 30 awakened some form of power explained to them by a screen that only they could see. There was one other significant change after the voice spoke and this was the arrival of dungeons. The home of monsters and materials that would quickly revolutionize the world, this new golden age for humanity was quickly called a curse though as upon the first year anniversary of the event a battle occurred that crippled the largest cities in the world. Now what was once hailed as a golden age became the age of "mandatory dungeons" and survival of the fittest.

Twilight Hunt

Upon exiting into a cave James recieved another prompt from the system but he dismissed it without a thought.

"Lets go freshman we should see whats going on out there," with a nod James followed his guardian.

"Now listen close, this is a clear gate so you wont be killed if you screw up, you'll just be ejected by the gate. Try not to die though as you will end up barred for twenty-four hours and with the gates having a two to one ratio of time, that means one day outside is two days in a gate, those twenty-four hours are crippling for your first week."

Nodding along and committing the information to memory James watched as his guardian examined the edge of the cave "something isnt right.... we did enter gate two right?"

"Yeah of course we did, why?" James thought about the situation and hoped the guardian was only pranking him.

"This gate is nicknamed the Golden Forest because its always noon and the trees have special golden leaves that make everything shiny from the reflected sunlight. If the dimension is always bright then what's wrong with what you see now?"

Looking out of the cave James shook his head seeing nothing strange, the only thing being the colors were dull like he was wearing sunglasses. As he thought this he remembered his test, "Sorry I guess i didn't think about it... so are we leaving?"

"No if this is an anomaly it wont be that bad if its only a time change"

"Well what should i call you?" his upperclassman turned to look at him with a smug smile as if he'd been waiting for this.

"Call me Master Thomas since you will be my student for the next week. Now lets go, normally you're supposed to sign in at the compound but no one really does it in these gates since there's no danger" guardian thomas began to leave down a well worn path between the trees. The silence of the forest was only broken by Thomas's loud footsteps.

As the pair entered the forest james was watching his surroundings as he slid his gloves over his hands. He questioned whether they would be useful but they had textured palms and fingers so they would probably help him keep a grip on his borrowed weapon, surprisingly the gloves were very comfortable. While he was marveling over the gloves he did not notice when thomas suddenly stopped swatting at his shoulder.

"What the whats on me?" unseen to the older student and just barely visible to james was a thin strand of silk clinging to his shoulder. Each swipe at the silk thread only made it cling to him more as the silk defied any logic, stretching and pulling until he has tangled so much he almost couldn't move. As his annoyed struggling became frantic james saw something that made his blood run cold, a spider the size of a small dog was slowly moving down a silk thread beside thomas.

"Thomas! Stop moving and look above you!" James spoke as loudly as he dared while preparing his sword. Thomas froze looking straight up struggling to see as jame swung with all his might, he caught the spider off guard but his aim was poor only cleaving away three of the legs and getting caught up in the web. Knowing how durable the silk was james let go of the sword raising his fists as the spider hit the ground. Taking advantage of the situation he quickly stomped on the beasts abdomen crushing it into the ground where its limbs flailed around before finally curling in to its body.

James ignored the multiple dings in his ears while he rushed to thomas ready to help free him but what he saw froze him to his core, a spider that would easily be the size of a horse had sunk its fangs into thomas's chest. Without stopping to think james ran as fast as he could until he found a clearing with a lake, he was bent over gasping for breath when he looked back up and saw a notification sign in the corner of his vision. After checking that the area was clear james opened the system window to check what he had.

After processing all of this james sat down and began questioning what his choice should be. On one hand the basic classes were likely not as powerful or versatile as the unique classes could potentially be but he would easily find teachers who could help him improve his skills with the class.

At the same time the unique classes would most likely have amazing synergy with his current traits. "System what can you tell me about this unique classes?"

While reading the systems response the words suddenly became distorted, suddenly a soft female voice spoke in his ear while pitch black words appeared on the system screen. He was extremely confused but the voice was gentle and comforting to him. "Ok..... i choose Void Beast as my class"

After speaking these words james suddenly lost consciousness, when he opened his eyes he saw a black ticket in his hand, a wheel in front of him, a black glass box at his feet and a pitch black void as far as the eye could see. A screen appeared asking if he wished to use the ticket and he accepted remembering what it was. The wheel began spinning with a cloud of black mist slowly exuding from the center until it launched into his body.

A new ability that would protect him. Around him the dark void slowly vanished and before his eyes was the lake he sat in front of, by his side was the glass box but before he could check its contents he saw the lake bubbling.

From the shore a large clawed limb appeared and with a speed to fast for him to react, the clawed limb struck at something on the ground near him. James felt a splash hit his cheek and slowly looking to the side he saw a dark wolf like beast that had been skewered by the claws. Behind the beast were a half a dozen similar beasts that lunged at the limb with their fangs and claws attempting to get revenge for their fallen packmate. Seeing this clash james lifted his chest and began to slowly back away to find a safe place to open it, the distraction probably wouldn't last long and the winner of the clash would potentially want to hunt easy prey like himself.

After taking cover behind a rock james quickly opened the chest praying for something that would help him run or fight. Within the chest rested a bizarre sight for the teenager, a simple fur coat, bracers and leather boots that resembled clawed feet.
