Hunger for her family's survival drove nineteen-year-old Aneesa to venture into Vernon, the kingdom of werewolves and home to all supernatural creatures. As a skilled thief, Aneesa successfully steals the King's Ruby, unaware of the curse that accompanies it. The ruby grants ultimate power among the supernatural, and when Prince Corion, brother to King Aspen, discovers its missing, he tracks down the thief responsible. Corion intends to use the ruby to overthrow his brother and take the throne, but to do so, he must break the curse that will kill Aneesa once the power is withdrawn from her. As he trains Aneesa and plans his coup, he finds himself inexplicably drawn to her, despite his initial indifference to her life. Can Aneesa survive in this dangerous new world? Will Corion be able to save her and break the curse? And what will happen when the ultimate power of the ruby is unleashed?
I watched in horror as Corion's grip tightened around my neck, cutting off my air supply. Instinct kicked in immediately. I tried to break free of his hold and throw him off me but he was unyielding. Panic surged through me as I struggled to breathe, my vision blurring as I glanced up at him.
"Let go of me!" I managed to yell, my voice strained with fear and desperation but Corion smirked at me.
Fucking smirked at me as if he was enjoying it! Something was wrong somewhere! With all the strength I could muster, I grabbed his hand and forced it off my neck, gasping for air. In a split-second decision, I balled my fist and threw a punch at his face.
To my shock, Corion's head barely moved as my fist connected with his cheek. The sound that emanated from him was chilling, sending shivers down my spine and causing goose bumps to appear on my skin. It was at that moment that I realized the true extent of the danger I was in.
As Corion turned his gaze back to me, a sinister smile playing on his lips, I knew that this was far from over.
"Mine! Corion suddenly growled out, his voice low and possessive.
Before I could react, he leaned down toward me, his intent clear. Panic surged through me and I instinctively moved my head away, causing him to redirect his attention to my neck instead. His breath was hot against my skin, and I could feel the power and desire emanating from him.
I tried to gather my thoughts but his touch sent a jolt of electricity through me and I gasped as his lips brushed against my skin. I could feel his hot breath against my neck, his presence overwhelming, I was torn between the desire to resist and the inexplicable pull I felt towards him.
As I felt a swipe of his neck before he gently nipped on it, I felt a strange mix of fear and arousal wash over me. I knew I should push him away but something about his intensity and the way he looked at me made it difficult to resist. I was caught in a whirlwind of conflicting emotions, unsure of what to do next.
Corion's kisses were both tender and urgent, sending a rush of sensations through my body. I was drawn to him, yet a part of me resisted, knowing the danger that lay in his touch.
As he continued to kiss my neck, his movements were growing more needy, I felt a strange sensation against my skin. Something sharp, almost like fangs, pressed against me. Was he? My eyes flew open and I reached out and pushed him away from me.
The strength that surged through me was unexpected, almost primal. I didn't stop to question where it came from, my instincts taking over as I tried to create distance between us. I hurriedly stood up from the bed, taking the bed sheet with me, and wrapped it around my body like a sari. What the fuck? I asked myself as I stared at Corion who was staring at me, that eerie look still in his gaze.
"Did you just try to bite me?" I asked him in disbelief,
Before I could blink, Corion was in front of me instantly, his movements so swift and inhuman that my eyes widened in realization.
"You…that…what…" I breathed starting to feel fear crawl up my spine.
What I saw now shouldn't be possible, it shouldn't ever be possible at all. He was a werewolf, yet he displayed the abilities of a vampyre.
"What…what are you?" I asked but instead of answering me, Corion gripped my throat, drawing me close to him.
His emotionless green eyes stared down at me, causing my heart to pound in fear because deep down I already knew the answer but my brain was still struggling to come to terms with it.
Using one long claw, Corion effortlessly tore the bedsheet from my trembling body, leaving me exposed and vulnerable before him. I could feel the heat of his breath on my skin, his presence looming over me like a dark shadow.
"Please." I whispered, barely above a pleading murmur, "Please, Corion, don't do this!"
"Aneesa?"
A shuddered gasp escaped my lips at the mention of my name on his lips. I opened my eyes only to see Corion staring at me, his chest rising and falling rapidly as he inched closer towards me. I held my breath as he reached up to carefully frame my face in his hands which still had claws.
"Aneesa," Corion whispered my name, almost like a prayer, letting his forehead fall to mine as he closed his hands.
I reached up to wrap my hands around his wrist. "I'm here, I'm right here," I whispered back.
I wasn't sure what was happening or whether he was starting to return to his normal self. But whatever moment we had was shattered completely. The door suddenly slammed open with a loud bang! Corion whipped his head at the entrance with a growl that raised the hairs on my arms.
"Shit!" Reagan cursed.
In one swift moment, Reagan shifted into shadow and grabbed Corion, throwing him away from me. I watched in horror as Corion fell to the ground.
"Run!" Reagan stated looking at me before he focused on Corion who snarled at Reagan.
"Wait, what?" I breathed out starting to feel confused.
"Run! Get out of here!" Reagan yelled just as Corion moved forward and I thought he was going to attack Reagan but Corion made a move for me instead, opening his mouth wide and revealing two long fangs.
A small scream tore from my lips just as Corion grabbed me by the neck, rearing his head back but before the pain could come, he was ripped away from me again by Reagan who threw Corion against the wall, using the shadows to hold him tightly as he turned back to look at me.
"For fuck's sake Aneesa, run!" Reagan yelled at me and I didn't need to be told twice,
I grabbed the discarded bed sheet from the floor and ran out of the room, not bothering to turn back at all, not even when Corion called my name as if he was in pain.
