Chapter 2: First Days of Classes

It was the first day of classes at the college. Alex woke up and did his usual morning routine before heading to the lobby. He greeted Ms. Chen before leaving and heading to the college. It was only about fifteen or so minutes away by foot, so it wasn't that much of a journey. Once he arrived, he saw a couple hundred students around the campus. It was a small college, so that was to be expected. Alex walked into the entrance hall and looked at his schedule.

7 a.m.–9 a.m.: General History, Room 503

10 a.m.–12 p.m.: Supernatural Studies, Room 212

Luckily for Alex today, he only had two classes; however, sadly for Alex...

Alex: Great...

He was less than enthused.

Alex signed before heading to classroom 503. Once he reached there, he sat in the back corner of the room. Each desk was only big enough for two people, so he decided to sit alone for the time being. He took out his notebook and pen before putting in his Bluetooth earphones and starting to listen to his playlist.

A few minutes of this passed until he felt a tap on his shoulder. Alex turned around, and a girl was standing behind him, smiling.

???: Is it okay if I sit here?

The girl had long blonde hair and blue eyes; she was quite pretty and had a sort of girl next door kind of feeling to her. Alex nodded in response, and so the girl put her bag on the desk and sat next to him.

???: Hi! What's your name?

Alex: Alex, how about you?

???: I'm Mina; it's nice to meet you. I don't think I've seen you before.

Alex: I just moved here a couple of days ago.

Mina: Oh wow! From where?

Alex: Just outside of D.C.

Mina: It's not every day we get someone from a major area to move here. Is there a reason?

Alex: I just prefer the quiet; it's a lot...less chaotic than the city.

Mina: I get that. The cities aren't for everyone after all.

The two talked for a few minutes until the teacher arrived. He was a man in his mid-forties with graying hair and glasses.

Teacher: Hello students, my name is Mr. Hill, and I will be teaching you about history. This is general history, so we won't be sticking to just one area and instead focusing on major events worldwide, but since this is the first day, I'll go easy on you. We'll learn about this town today since a majority of you are from here. Can anyone tell me why the town is named Redfall?

Student: Because when our town was founded, there was a red moon, right?

Mr. Hill: Well, according to the legends anyway, yes. The story goes that when our town was founded, there was a red moon that night, although more than likely it was just an eclipse.

Alex: Red moon? No...couldn't be.

Mr. Hill: Now why else are we called Redfall?

Mina: Because supposedly on the day that there was the red moon, it had rained, and the reflection from it made the water turn red.

Mr. Hill: Correct. As such, the group that founded our town named it Redfall, signifying that. It's also why we drink red fruit punch on the anniversary of the town's founding. Now, can anyone tell me about the Atlas Tribe?

Student: It's the werewolf tribe outside in the dark forest, right?

Alex: Werewolves?

Mr. Hill: Correct. As you know, we are forbidden from entering that part of the woods. For well over a hundred years, our town leadership has made a deal with them. We stay away from their territory, and they don't enter the city. Of course, there've been a few cases where the rules were broken, but through great negotiations, those situations were handled. Now I know it's not my class to teach about the supernatural, but I just feel the need to warn all of you. Do not, under any circumstances, enter the dark woods; if you do, there's no guarantee that you will come back to the town. Is that understood?

Class: Yes.

Mr. Hill: Good. Now for the remainder of class, please talk amongst yourselves. Next class, we'll really get into the lessons.

Mina: Talk about an introduction.

Alex: Yeah... I didn't know there was a werewolf tribe nearby.

Mina: Yeah, I've never seen one, which, I guess, is a good thing. There was an incident a couple of years ago when a group of high schoolers went into the woods on a dare. Things didn't end well.

Alex: Really?

Mina: Yeah, two of the high schoolers were severely injured, and one was even killed.

Alex: That sounds troubling...

Mina: Yeah...though the mayor didn't invite the SCA in. He didn't want to start any conflict. So he apologized to the tribe, and they came to a new peace deal.

Alex: That makes sense.

Mina: Yeah, anyway, enough of that talk. Tell me a bit more about yourself.

Alex: Myself?

Mina: Yeah, like, what are your hobbies or hidden talents?

Alex: I don't know about hidden talents, but hobby-wise, I like to read.

Mina: Any specific kind of book?

Alex: Just ones that interest me. I don't have a favorite genre.

Mina: Nice; not many people our age like to read books all that much.

Alex: Yeah, what about you? Any hobbies?

Mina: I play the piano.

Alex: Really?

Mina: Yeah, my grandmother has taught since I was very young, and I just picked up on it.

Alex: Wow, well, I'd love to hear you play sometime.

Mina: R-Really?

Alex: Yeah, why not?

Mina: Then it's a deal, then.

After a little while, class soon ended, and Alex and Mina went their separate ways. Alex now had to head to his next class.

Alex: Let's see...Room 212 is all the way across campus. Great.

Alex hurried to his next class, which, of course, was all the way across the campus. Once he had arrived, he looked around the room and spotted two familiar faces in the crowd of students.

Alex: No way.

Jordan: Hey! Come here!

Jordan was the boy who had met Alex in the park, and next to him was the waitress from the diner, Aurora.

Jordan: I guess we have the same class.

Alex: I didn't expect you two to be here.

Aurora: Hello again!

Jordan: You two met?

Aurora: He came to the diner one night a couple days ago. How do you two know each other?

Jordan: Mack may've thrown a football at his face.

Aurora: Oh...ouch.

Alex: I caught it, mind you.

Aurora: Well, that's good.

Jordan: Yeah, you should've seen his reflexes! It's why I'm trying to get him on the football team. Speaking of...Alex?

Alex: I'm still thinking about it.

Jordan: Come on, man! We need receivers; all our guys are now freshmen since most of the sophomores transferred to better schools.

Aurora: Don't force him into it.

Jordan: I'm not; I just want to have a shot at the playoffs this year.

Alex: Like I said, I'll think about it; you have me curious.

Jordan: Yes!

Alex: So how do you two know each other?

Jordan: We've been friends for years.

Aurora: His sister and I have been in the same grade for years, and through her, I met Jordan.

Jordan: It's bene about six years...no seven.

Aurora: It's been eight.

Jordan: Right...so did you guys see the news about that vamp attack?

Aurora: You mean the one near my work?

Jordan: Yeah!

Aurora: Kinda scary knowing it happened near my work.

Alex: I'm sure it's fine; just make sure you two avoid alleyways at night.

Jordan: True. The last thing I need is to become a vamp snack.

As the three were talking, the teacher walked inside the classroom. She was a woman who had dark skin, long black hair, and brown eyes. She was wearing a gray women's suit and couldn't be more than 40 years old. She was quite beautiful, considering.

Teacher: Hello class, I'm Mrs. Williams. While I did have a plan for today, things changed. I know all of you here have heard about that recent vampire attack. First off, I'll say you are safe and have little to worry about as long as you follow the precautions set by the police officers. I also have a guest today who will speak to all of you regarding the events of the weekend. Please welcome, SCA Investigator Amber Dunn.

Then a woman walked through the door. She had long brown hair with a single braid and brown eyes. She was wearing a suit top with a skirt, stockings, and heels. She was quite beautiful, although Alex would never admit that out loud; after all, that would be quite embarrassing.

Jordan: She's gorgeous.

Then again, some people don't care and say it in any way.

Amber: Hello Everyone! As you know, I'm a SCA agent. The SCA stands for Supernatural Capture Agency, and our jobs include capturing the supernatural as well as studying them and, if it comes down to it, exterminating them. Now I'm here today to discuss what we know about what happened over the weekend and how all of you can avoid it, as well as some new rules that will be established for your safety.

Students: Rules?

Amber: Yes, but we'll get to that. First off, from what we know, a vampire attacked two high school girls who were walking home together from a friend's house. They made a cut into the alleyway to get home quicker, but a vampire had been using that alley as its hunting grounds. The vampire attacked the girls and drained the blood from one of them, slowly causing her to die. Now most vampires need to feed at least once a week; however, not all of them do; some vampires can go months without feeding. This vampire is what we call a common class, one of the most common vampires around. It's weaker than the rarer ones and holds no special abilities, at least in the supernatural world. However, this does not make them any less dangerous; they are still extremely strong and fast. You will not be able to fight them off or outrun them.

Student: So how do we escape?

Amber: If you are cornered at that point, it's a matter of luck; however, if you take certain precautions, you won't be in that situation to begin with. What I mean is, stay on public streets. Vampires aren't bold enough to attack in public; they like to stick to the shadows, so avoid alleyways and parks in the middle of the night. In the attack last night, the survivor got lucky; a second vampire showed up and fought the other one for food, which gave her enough time to escape. If that vampire hadn't appeared, that girl would most likely have been killed as well. Now myself, as well as my husband, who's also a SCA agent, and the police will be working together to figure things out and hopefully make your town more peaceful. Any questions?

Students: You said we couldn't kill vampires...but how can you?

Amber: Well, all investigators at the SCA have been trained in how to kill them, and we use weapons that are highly effective against them. It's why we are specialists. So don't worry about it; we will handle the situation, we promise!

Alex looked at the woman, and while she was beautiful and had a bright personality, he knew that if she ever found him, things would become dangerous.

Alex: I just have to blend in. Then there should be no worries.

After Amber had answered all of the questions, class had ended, and Alex started to pack up to go home.

Aurora: Hey Alex. How about you join us in heading to the diner?

Alex: Are you working?

Aurora: No *Laughs* just as a customer this time. Me, Jordan and his sister planned to go there to hang out.

Alex: Okay, sure.

Aurora: Awesome! C'mon!

Aurora and Jordan started to walk out, with Alex right behind them.

Alex: Hanging out with friends after school is normal; this is normal...just how I wanted it.
