A series of unfortunate events

I took a sip of the wine as I watched the monkeys dancing or as most people call them, the members of the aristocracy. The slow music was doing a better job than my mom at making me sleep.

I just wanted to get my work done and get out of here since it's getting really hard to control my laughter. Mrs Pattison was dancing with her - hopefully - future son-in-law. I am not sure if dancing is the right term, crushing would be more appropriate I suppose. Her Cheshire smile never leaving her face as her bosom made it difficult for the poor man to even breathe. He looked diminutive in front of her enormous figure. From where I was sitting the view was perfect of the man stepping on Mrs Pattison's gown and then tripping over, only Mrs Pattison fell too. I let out a laugh as the man looked like he fainted below the squirming whale. A few knights came forward to help them as I turned my back trying to control my laugh.

Fortunately for me, my prey hasn't left my sight yet. Unfortunately, he was surrounded by way too many monkeys. So I decide to wait for the opportunity while I fill my hungry stomach.

I picked up another tart from the counter when a pair of shoes came into my view. I looked up into the deep green eyes of a man, that were most certainly assessing me, a fake smile gracing his well-sculpted face.

" May I have this dance," he asked while extending his left hand to my level. It may be phrased as a question but there was no room for rejection.

Externally, I smiled. Internally I was suspicious of him, the glint in his eyes made me want to shiver even when he was giving me the most charming smile. Yet I knew he knows nothing about my plan. But clearly, I can't refuse him, it would draw too much attention and suspicion.

I took his hand and stood up. Almost everyone was looking at us by the time we reached the dance floor.

Weird.

The man placed his hand on the small of my back, my hand on his shoulder, and just as our palms met, the song changed to a more tantalizing rhythm. Together we danced, our feet in perfect sync. Suddenly I had an urge to move my hands through his black silky hair and pull them.

" You have beautiful eyes, " he complimented looking intensely into my black eyes.

Obviously, I knew I had beautiful eyes. Eyes, they were one of my most promising weapons. But he probably doesn't know the secrets that lie within.

" You aren't bad yourself, " I smirked. He removed his hand from my back and played with a flick of my hair before putting it behind my ear and grabbing my waist again, this time bringing me more closer to him than before. He smelled so delicious that I couldn't help but curse at his royal blood again. I couldn't let my heart sway me.

" What's your name- " my eyes moved towards the man in the blue coat, going out of the room.

ah, shit shit.

" Thank you for the dance but I need to leave. " I courtesied and almost ran out of the Ball Room, without waiting for his response. Those weren't the proper etiquettes, I hope that man wouldn't get suspicious. I don't even know his name and he seemed like he was onto something. Not to mention the kind of attention he had gained in the ballroom. He is surely a member of the aristocracy.

My trail of thoughts was broken when the viceroy took a turn towards a much-secluded area. The corridor was empty except for some of the old men scrutinizingly glaring at me through their portraits. These men won't let a woman breathe even after dying, oh the injustice in this world.

I was just going to catch up to him and plunge the dagger into his heart when someone marched past me.

" Your Majesty, Your presence will be required in fifteen minutes. " the guard bowed down.

I stopped dead in my tracks. Oh, that was close and what did he say -

YOUR MAJESTY ?!

" I shall be there. " the king turned slightly and carried on.

The guard glanced at me and went off in the same direction, he came from. My heart raced as I realized what I was about to do had that guard not come. Killing the King would have made it impossible for me to escape. It would have destroyed my life if not end it. I wiped the cold sweat from my forehead and decided to wait for another opportunity in the ballroom.

But it looked like god was on my side today. I found the Viceroy Marcus just at the entrance of the ballroom, going towards the corridor all alone. A smirk crept into my mouth as I gave a flying kiss towards heaven.

I can't let him slide this time. There isn't anyone out there which gives me a perfect opportunity to escape before anyone notices his absence. I increased my pace to come closer to him. I took out the poisoned dagger from the ankle knife holster as I made my way towards him. I just need to slit the nerve on his neck and he will be dead. He was like a big fat rat in the grain house, selfish and greedy.

I held my breath as I extended one arm to immobilize him, the dagger ready in other but before I could touch him I let out a yelp as a hand wrapped around my waist and twisted the other behind my back. The commotion caused the Viceroy to notice our presence and he turned around.

My face left all colour and my eyes were as wide as saucers.

" I see you are enjoying the evening, Prince Dominic." he gave us a vile smirk and left.

WHAT IN THE HOLY GRACIOUS PRINCE?!

My heart stopped and my breathing became ragged. But yet the Prince seemed calm.

He then loosened his grip, turned me around, and pushed me against the wall. Capturing my wrists in his hands. My jaw dropped. The same man who asked me - told me - to dance with him.

He looked as if he caught a child eating sweets at night.

" Now. Now. Why would you try to kill The Viceroy? " he asked as if he was really talking to a kid.

Did he think I was lost or something and so I decided to kill The Viceroy? Why in the world was he so calm ?! He was just a chauvinistic bastard who thought I wouldn't have actually killed The Viceroy, cause I am a woman. And they are weak, emotional. I wanted to pull his hair and beat him to the pulp.

I gave him my best ' I will kill you " look and was about to give a savage comeback when a guard interrupted us, or more like a group of guards. All of them had a look of panic and distress on their faces.

" Prince Dominic! His Majesty is missing."

And just like that Dominic was off me and questioning the guards.

" Missing !? I just saw him going towards the library. Did you look in his room? "

The vein on his neck popped as he asked in his same calm voice. His eyes showed the distress that he was hiding too well.

One of the guards whom I seem to recognize said, " Last I saw him in the hallway towards the library, he said he will be present in the hall after-

He stopped as his eyes met mine.

Oh shit. He isn't suspecting me, is he?

" Malady, you were behind His Majesty in the hallway. Did you see anyone? "

" NO, I –

" You... It's you again, " he turned towards me, eyes glaring at me, " I hope you aren't behind this for your own sake, " He smiled. It made me shiver, his eyes showing the dark intentions that made me want to combust into thin air.

" Take her to the dungeon. I will check the library and other places. Make sure no one knows about father's disappearance. " with that he looked at me one last time before leaving.

The guards captured my arms and started leading me, probably towards the dungeon.

That idiot took my dagger with him too. And I am also a possible suspect for King's kidnapping.

Could this night get any worse?
