Next to be Eaten

Crows floated around the sky, their voices made no noise. In the eerie quietness of the morning, the sound of water crashing with the vessel accompanied by the hooting of wind vibrated in the air. The high pitched squeal of a lone seagull pierced the sky from afar. Fog accumulated closer to the soil and ocean. It looked like the clouds had come down to the sea.

Amid the uncanny dockyard, where no humans nor undeads could be seen, Fein waltz inside. A gas mask hanging around his neck, in his hands there were three bags of blood. He cut a corner of the bag and sprayed it on the ground.

"I feel sorry for wasting three bags of blood." The device in his left ear lit up.

"Don't worry. Our bodies have already reproduced that amount of blood." Replied Yulia.

With her sniper rifle OSV- 96 pointing at Fein, she could clearly see him through the scope from the lighthouse in which she was stationed.

Fein noticed the red dot pointing to his chest which prompted him to ask. "Are you planning to shoot me with your shiny rifle, Ms Yulia?"

"Haha. No."

"Ma'am, speaking from ship WS560. Our cannons are all set."

"Speaking from TSV7709 ma'am. Our rail guns are all set."

"Heli30 speaking, ma'am. We are hovering near the side of Von 2402 facing the ocean."

Likewise a wave of reports stormed in.

Kuina, the closest to Fein, spoke. "Its been a while and the beasts haven't shown up yet."

Fein twisted his waist with his arms on his hips and glanced at Kuina's location.

"You're right. They still haven't shown up."

"Don't tell me.. i wasted my fucking blood for nothing?!" Exclaimed Ran.

"There was my blood too, Ran." Replied Eudimor who was connected with them via telecoms.

"Its no good. The beasts aren't coming down."

Yulia pressed the comm attached to her right ear. "What is their status of activity inside the vessel?"

"Receiving no activities, ma'am!"

"No activities?!"

Fein waited, not so patiently. His feet trembled, heart raged. He glared from the top of his eyes, thumb nail pressing in his pointer finger. He could feel himself shiver up in intervals.

Suddenly the thought of death was scaring him. His fear of uncertainty grew larger.

He was getting cold feet with every passing second. He wanted to turn back and run away.

But it is too late to run away now.

Fein left out a deep exhale. "Are we going to keep waiting here forever, Ms Yulia? I'm getting tired, you know."

Yulia didn't complain to his wail rather came down to the conclusion. "We will proceed with the plan beta. Heli 30 and Avex. Please switch to your positions."

"Yes ma'am!"

The two helicopters, with their howling speeding blades cutting through the wind, descended and dropped a couple of smoke grenades into the vessel.

Beasts may be immortal and all. But once any of their senses are disabled, they will start to lower their guard.

Fein knew that from his previous experience. Thus the plan beta was born.

"Detecting activities from the calamities, ma'am!"

"You heard that Fein?"

"Yeah." He raised his arms, reached out to the back of his neck and untied the gas mask. Positioning the mask properly, he fixed it on his face. "Its time to get into it, huh."

A rumbling noise penetrated into their ears. The seagulls nearby flew haywire.

It were the beasts!

The smoke grenades worked. They should be rushing around, looking for an open space to escape the smoke.

If i can just survive until the…

While Fein was busy preparing himself, a beast, stealthily and speedily, appeared out of the fog right beside him.

In the split second, Fein glanced at it from his corner-most sights. He couldn't notice it there until it came so close to him, at a range where Fein couldn't even move.

Its left arm was stretched horizontally. It clutched Fein and disappeared into the fog.

"Heuk!" Fein gasped.

The above event was his foresight. He quickly turned to his left. He knew the event wasn't far into the future.

If it has to happen it should happen right no….

Abruptly a dark figure zoomed towards him through the mist.

He leapt away instantly to avoid collision.

"The beast has shown up!"

The beast inclined its head at Fein. It saw him pulling a pin out from the header of the smoke grenade. Fein dropped it on the ground and dashed far away from it.

For the irritation caused by the smoke, it growled and roared.

"Point the rail guns… And shoot!"

"Ma'am! Beast 3 has jumped into the ocean!"

"Don't shoot into water! Let it climb to the surface!"

"Yes!"

The rail guns from the war ships rotated as it showered dozens of bullets on the beast. The rapid incessant sound of shooting buzzed into their ears as if making them bleed.

Rail guns were defending great against the beast as it could not move from its position.

However the 1st beast plunged exactly onto Fein. Fein could barely dodge getting crushed underneath it.

The moment it raised its claws to attack him, Fein pulled out his obsidian dagger, Alaister ll. He collided his blade against its claws. The beast untangled its claws and proceeded to attack him again.

Fein clashed his daggers and defended himself.

Unnaturally, Fein could feel himself moving in a certain algorithm. It was as if his body was accustomed to using blades though he couldn't remember himself using daggers in his life before.

I can't win against it!

He thought.

I'll have to send it as far away as possible!

"Ms Yulia!"

"Yes." Yulia pulled the trigger of the bullet magazine. Her eyes locked sharp at the beast through the scope. "Duck."

The instant he slouched to the ground, Yulia shot the beast in its head.

"All units on the field. Fire!"

With the command Fein immediately jumped into a cargo container stalled in the dockyard.

It was a continuous rain of fireworks.

Soon the sound reduced.

What happened?

The rail guns overheated. But it still wasn't enough. The beast withstood it until the very last bullet.

Its skin fuming white vapours, it groaned.

After a howl it began to dash towards the ships to destroy it.

"Retreat! Retreat!"

But the ships were slow. The beast would definitely catch up to them.

"Avex! Shoot!"

The helicopter hovering in the sky started to shoot as per the command.

"All members! Hold on until the vessel departs!"

"Yes ma'am!"

Fein, who dashed through the clouds of gunpowder, looked up at the sky and discovered something horrific!

The beast ,3 that had jumped into the ocean, sprung up and attacked Avex. Destroying the controls, the helicopter along with the beast, crashed into the dock.

The pilots inside died an instant death. It replenished its energy swallowing the huge bite it tore off from their flesh.

Staggered, Fein stared at it chewing their flesh with blood slipping from its mouth.

He couldn't move from the scene even though he knew the beast noticed him.

He knew it was him next who was going to be eaten.
