In ancient times, women were deemed as things and not human beings. They were more like products used to elevate and boost the status of the men. The beauty of women was considered. Their reputation and ability to manage the household also held the same importance.
In a society ruled by men, women didn't have much say in getting their choices.
This patriarchal culture carried on, even to the modern times albeit lesser than the past. In the high society, most families favored the males over the females, particularly the children. The male child, when born, would be deemed instantly as an heir of the family business.
As for the female child, the purpose of the female child would be to connect the family to another influential family through an arranged marriage for benefits. Once married, she would have to carry on the bloodline and manage the household.
