Chapter 13
"Uhm Hayden" I started and he just looked at me saying nothing.
"I am ...uhm.." I scratch my hair finding it hard to say.
"I guess you aren't ready" he said turning to leave and I hurriedly stopped him by holding his arm.
"I..I am sorry about yesterday. I went out with my best friend and lost track of time. That was why I came home late. I'm also sorry for snapping at you. I was wrong, I admit"
Damn! That was so hard to say.
He looked at me as his facial expression changed and then at my hands on his arms. I quickly released my hand and gulped down nothing.
"It's fine. Just allow Jacob take you anywhere you want to go" He finally said.
"Aye aye sir" I raised my hand up dramatically.
"So why didn't you go to work today?" I asked curiously.
"Want to spend...uhm, I have some work to do" he replied and I just nodded.
*******
Hayden and I had breakfast together and it was kind of awkward until I decided to break the silence.
"I am going to the library today" I started.
He doesn't really have to know about by activity but I felt the need to let him know.
"What type of books do you want to get?" He asked and I looked up at him.
Quite smart, I see. I was expecting him to ask to do what like someone else would have asked when they clearly know the function a library performs.
"My entrance exam is near and I really need to prepare it I really want to enter college this year" I said and he said nothing, he seems to be in thought.
"You are not going to stop me from going to college right?"
"Of course not. Education is important. I can't hinder you from doing what you want to do"
"Perfect then,"
I wanted to ask him a question but I decided not to.
"That reminds me. I also want to get some books at the library"
"Are you indirectly asking us to go together" I teased.
He didn't reply me, rather he continued eating.
I scoffed. "Still a jerk"
****************
TWO HOURS LATER...
At the library....
"You are going to read that?" I asked with my eyes widened at the book Hayden selected from the shelf.
"And what's wrong with the book?" He asked.
"Business plans blah blah...Argh!, I would probably doze off at the second page and that has like 400 pages?!"
"I'm the one reading it and not you. Why are you complaining?"
"Tsk! You are so boring, you should get something more interesting to read not this boring book"
He looked at me amusedly and moved closer to me making me rest my back at the shelf.
"You are getting books for your exam? Are the books in any way fun to read?"
"No, because they are textbooks and textbooks are naturally boring"
"So...?" He looked at me questionably.
"You aren't attending any school anymore. No exams to worry about. Why do you even need to read books? This kind for that matter" I scoffed.
"I also am reading the book for an exam. If you could put it in that way. I need to improve my business. This Books help in a way too"
"Yeah yeah, I get it. Can you please stop being close to me now? It's making me really uncomfortable" I said and he seem to realize how close he is to me and moved backwards.
After leaving the library, he suggested we go to the coffee shop near the library. I don't know why but this seems like a date.
"About college, which one are you choosing?"
"Harvard" I replied.
"Why Harvard?"
"Because I like it" I answered rolling my eyes.
"Harvard isn't that close to this place. Why can't you choose a university close here?" He inquired.
"And how is that your business?" I was beginning to get angry again.
"It won't be nice if you are far from home" He said.
"First of all, your house isn't my home. Secondly, I didn't say I would rent an apartment around the school but now that you say it, I'm actually considering it"
"Brittany!"
"What?" I shrugged. "I can do whatever I want. My plan have always being to go to college, meet a guy I like, get a job, marry a man I really love and have kids. I didn't expect it is going to turn out like this. You are done with your education. You have a big company, big mansion, numerous car, luxurious life. Can you please not meddle in my affairs"
He looked a bit shocked at my outburst. I didn't want to create any more trouble with him but whenever I remember the marriage is arranged and I actually don't love this man who happens to be my husband, I can't help but being rude to him and snap at him.
"Let us leave" he said standing up.
"What? But we haven't even ordered for anything"
He didn't answer him and started walking out of the shop and I couldn't help but follow him.
The drive home was awkwardly silent. I won't feel remorseful because everything I said is actually true. For fuck sake, I'm still 17!
We got home and Hayden went straight to our room while I carried the books we got at the library to the room.
Hayden was nice to me in the morning but now, he wouldn't even look at my face.
"I didn't say anything hurtful, did I?" I asked myself shrugging.
I picked one of the textbooks and left for the living room to start reading but I couldn't even concentrate. I kept thinking about Hayden.
I groaned and went back to the room and he was on the bed operating his laptop.
I scoffed and proceeded to leave the room when his voice stopped me.
"Is it because of me you are going to Harvard?" He asked and I looked back and his full concentration was on me while he had an unreadable expression on.
"I don't get you"
"You are choosing a school far away from here so you would stop seeing me. Is that not it?" He inquired.
I rubbed my palm against each other. "Since you put it that way, Then yes"
I then turned back and left the room immediately closing the door behind me.
