Chapter 33

Michelle answered the door mere moments after he knocked, like she had been expecting him. Her first words seemed to confirm that was the case.

“I thought you would have come by yesterday.”

“Something came up yesterday,” Jesse said, lifting the pastry box. “But I brought food.”

“Appealing to my sweet tooth?”

“I didn’t think it would hurt.”

“Come in. What came up yesterday?”

“Long story. I’ll tell you later.”

“When?”

“After I see Dominique.”

“She’s still asleep.”

“Really? Well, I don’t think she’ll mind if I wake her up.”

“I mind.”

Jesse took a deep breath. “Is this how we’re going to play this, now? I have to toe the line before you even let me see her?”

“You don’t have any right to see her. Not legally.”

“Oh, so it’s a power trip for you, then.”

Michelle folded her arms and a deep frown creased her face. “You think that’s what this is? Look what happened the last time I allowed you two to spend too much time together. You disappeared for a week.”
