Chapter 20

Gideon expected to feel her skin tearing like paper against his teeth. He didn’t expect to feel a pair of strong hands on his shoulders a split second before he was ripped away from Carly’s sweet-smelling body and tossed against the wall by the door.

“What the fuck are you doing?” Jesse demanded.

Snarling, Gideon leapt to his feet. “The bitch tried to kill me when she thought I was asleep. Foster sent her.”

Jesse faced Carly. “Foster’s getting so desperate he’d send somebody like you to get killed?”

Her flashing gaze never left Gideon. “If he’d done what he was supposed to, I shouldn’t have had to come here at all. But then again, if your vamp boyfriend hadn’t interfered, Ray would still be alive.”

“Who the hell is…” But the demand died on Gideon’s lips. Flashes of a slightly pot-bellied fortysomething kneeling at a glowing dimensional fault filled his head. “Foster killed Ray Serrano,” he said instead. “That wasn’t me.”
