“We both know what it’s like when Foster attacks. He’s nearly killed both of us.” Jesse took a step toward her, gauged her reaction, then took another. “But something that Foster probably didn’t mention is that Gideon helps people now. That means you’re safe here.”

“It’s a big house,” Gideon said. “You never even have to see me.”

She snorted softly. “That’s an understatement. You should see Foster’s place. It’s—”

“—a hole in the wall.” Gideon smiled. “Yeah, I know.”

Carly still wasn’t taken in by Gideon’s attempts at charm, but she wasn’t running anymore, either. Her hands were back out of her pockets, too, which meant Jesse could take another cautious step forward.

“I’m sorry for reacting like that,” she said. “I just, well…it’s been a long couple of days.”
