Chapter 4: First Chess class

Chapter 4: First Chess class

"It's okay Hikaru you're not going to be punished." Levi said, as he pointed to an empty seat beside Kaito.

"Right Hikaru, why don't you introduce yourself." Levi said.

"Right, my name is Hikaru. I took chess because….ah! Because a magical spirit came into my dream and told me to play it!" As everyone looked at him with surprise, he then changed his sentence," Ah actually, my grandad asked me to play it before he passed on.I don't really have an aim, I am here to have fun."

I was able to easily recognise these 3 characters, as a massive anime nerd from my previous life.

Daimon Kaito from Phi Brain. A genius at solving puzzles, someone who has saved his world on multiple occasions. He uses the Orpheus armband to solve puzzles.

Shikamaru Nara, one of my favorite fictional characters. A genius in his own right with an extremely high IQ. A super genius at battle strategies who completely annihilated a man who claimed to be an immortal, one of his highlights in character development.

And Hikaru Shindo. Someone who is destined to play the divine move in Go, and someone who has Fujiawara No Sai, a ghost who loves the game and teaches it to Hikaru, leading him to the divine move.

Am I meant to fight these monsters?

[A Message from god has been sent]

[Ah, Micheal. I might have forgotten to mention I have sent various geniuses to this world to help it, but they will never know who they are. You might meet many or never meet any at all. Either way, they are smart in their own right.

Moreover, I forgot to mention the mission part of the system, but I am sure you can manage and figure it out. Good Luck-God]

[Chess Main Quest: Beat one of the 3 Geniusis today.

"Right. My name is Micheal Kzenti. I chose chess since I played it during the break after Elementary School and was interested in it. My goal is to at the very least know many various styles of Chess." I said, as Levi nodded.

"Now my turn. My name is Levi Rozman. I am a content creator of Chess on youtube. I am here on a contract basis with the school for 3 months, and am trying to gain experience of tutoring kids in chess. Right now I am a Master, at the Elo of 1600." He explained.

Shikamaru gave the man respect, as he listened to him, albeit not attentive. Kaito nodded as Hikaru seemed out of it…probably talking to his ghost.

"Right, why don't you guys pair up, and play against each other…how about Micheal vs Hikaru and Kaito vs Shikamaru. I will watch your games. It will be a 5 minute Blitz game." Levi said, as I swapped seats with Shikamaru,

Daito then raised his hand and asked," Sir, how do the pieces move again?"

"Right, let me quickly go through this." Levi said, as he tapped on the table. Instantly, a chess board of hard wood was set-up.

"Chess is a two-player strategy game played on a square board made up of 64 squares, with alternating light and dark colors.

Each player begins the game with 16 pieces: one king, one queen, two rooks, two knights, two bishops, and eight pawns.

The ultimate goal of the game is to checkmate the opponent's king.

This means putting the king into a position where it is under attack (in "check") and there is no way to move the king out of attack on the next turn (in "checkmate").

Each player takes turns making a move with one of their pieces.

In general, each piece can move in a specific way, and some pieces can only move in certain directions or patterns.

For example, the knight can move in an L-shape, two squares in one direction and then one square perpendicular to that direction.

The bishop can move diagonally any number of squares.

The queen can move in any direction along a straight line, either diagonally, vertically, or horizontally.

Pawns are unique because they can only move forward one square at a time, except for their first move when they can move forward two squares.

Pawns capture diagonally, and they can be promoted to any other piece if they reach the opponent's side of the board.

Players can capture their opponent's pieces by moving one of their pieces onto the square occupied by an opponent's piece.

If a piece is captured, it is removed from the board.

Players can also castle, which is a move that allows the king to move two squares towards a rook, while the rook moves to the square over which the king crossed.

This move is only possible if neither the king nor the rook have moved yet and there are no pieces between them.

There are also special moves like en passant and pawn promotion that players can use under certain circumstances." Levi explained.

"Now that you know the basics, you may begin." Levi said.

I was playing Black against Hikaru, and then Levi instructed the players playing black to start the clock. We were using standard competition clocks.

Shikamaru was playing black against Daito.

As I pressed Hikaru's clock, I was a little bit scared. After all, I wasn't playing against Hikaru, I was probably playing against Fujiwara No Sai, the ghost, and I didn't know if in this world he knew Go or Chess.

Hikaru then began with the classic move: Pawn to E4

As he forgot to press his clock, Levi then reminded him to press it.

I played back: Pawn to E5

Hikaru: Knight F3

Me: Knight C6

Now this next move was the one that decided how our game would do. He had 3 basic options, unless Sai knew something more complicated.

The Scotch Game

The Italian Game

The Spanish Game

Hikaru then played: Bishop to C4 making us move into the Italian Game

I then played: Knight F6

Hikaru: Knight G5

When we reached this current position, the Fried Liver attack, I realized that we moved into an opening I had studied before.

Something that I learnt from Levi himself.

I play Bishop C5

Up until now, we had been moving our pieces rather quickly, however now Hikaru stopped to think a little, and calmly waited.

After about 30 seconds, he played knight and took F7.

I immediately played Bishop F2 check.

Hikaru then played King F1, opting to not take the Bishop, the top engine move. Now I knew, I was not playing against Hikaru.

Unless Hikaru magically knew the Traxler counter, which isn't even that famous of an opening, since it is so hard to play with black, and played the main line when he barely knew how to play, I was playing against Fujiwara No Sai, and in this world, he had probably played chess instead of Go in the past.

I then played Queen E7.

Hikaru Played Knight takes rook H8.

I then played Pawn to D5.

Hikaru played Pawn takes D5, the top computer move once again.

After I played Knight D4, Hikaru played King takes Bishop F2, falling into the Traxler gambit.

Levi, who was watching the game, laughed a little. Mainly because Hikaru played fine until now but King taking Bishop was an extremely greedy move.

It seems that until Sai brushes up modern chess skills, I will have an advantage over him with my past life knowledge. But I also know Sai is a monster, and probably after a couple of weeks of studying he will be at the level of current Magnus Calrson.

I then played Knight G4 check.

Hikaru then played Knight G1.

I then played Queen C5.

After this, Hikaru looked up at me in shock.

Then, he seemed a little disappointed, as he raised his hand up and said, "I resign."
