Prologue: The Devil's Den

His granddad glances at him with a slight smile and then turned away and stared blankly at the starless night.

"You think you're a loser?"

"Why?"

Adam's eyes are bright red from crying, he was 13 years old at that time. Coming from a broken home, he had been living with the old man who was not even related to him by blood. He wiped his eyes and tried to mutter his reasons to the old man.

"I can't win… no matter how much I tried… I kept losing…"

The wind was cold that night, unusually cold… He can smell his granddad's smoke as the soft wind blows toward his face. The red light of the cigarette illuminated his grandad's face showing the wrinkled skin worn out by time. His grandad smiled a little as he looked at his adopted son, he then looked away and stared back at the starless sky.

Silence…

Adam was just staring at his grandad, waiting for him to say something. He tightens his grip to his pencil that he had been holding since he went out from school. He had bruises in his knee, and his clothes are covered with dust and blood. His eyes started to twitch as the old scar started to itch.

Silence….

His shirt was still wet from sweat and the cold night breeze makes his body shiver. His heart slows down calming himself to properly observed his grandad's face.

Nothing.

The old man just stood there with a smile on his face, silently finishing his lit cigarette. Adam eyes calmly gazed on the old man wrinkled face, The crack on his skin looked like an old stone cloaked with moss and dirt, every inch of his skin spells a clicking clock of an abandoned stone tower. Withered but unfazed. Continuously gazing from a far, observing the changing world until the last wheel of its gear drops.

"Kid… in this world, there are no winners." The old man puffs the last inch of the cigarette and flipped it across the front yard.

"But this world values are both vague and hypocrite, that's why we cling on the idea that we need to become the best, but in-fact, we only created that idea so we can focus on what we said we wanted, and forget the most basic truth…"

The butt of the cigarette that was lightly lit, slightly illuminates the yard, and the smoke dances along with the night breeze as it slowly dies out. Few feet from it shows the old man and Adam standing in the abandoned bungalow shredded in pieces, Glasses are scattered on the patio up to the yard, wooden debris anchored on the dirt where the previous house was, Rain started to pour and thunder ripped the sky as it kissed earth.

The abysmal sky ripped open and shown it's teeth towards the two. Adam unwary with what's going around him just stares at his grandad as he stiffened his two legs and tighten his fist.

"you are only a loser if you give up Adam, result only matter if you can hold your value until the very last breath you take…"

"Always remember, you can only be stronger once you understood what you value more than what you fear..."

As the old man speaks, a loud roaring sound echoed throughout the land, The sky seems alive, and it wants to devour everything in front of it.

Another lightning strikes, and it's blinding light shreds the mountain near them. Purple rain started pouring from the sky as chunks of tentacles as big as 2-storey building drops suddenly in front of the two. Hundreds of diamond teeth about 3 ft in length dropped like bombs as it scattered everything beneath it.

"Hi Grandpa…"

A younger man stood in front of Adam and his grandad, He has a black wavy hair, and although he has a rough face with all the scars and reddish skin, he looks just about 5 or 6 years older than Adam. He walks toward them as he drags a long piece of bones carved like a long Bolo.

The young Adam who is oblivious at first. Stared blankly, but menacingly following gaze as the young man walk past through his grandad. His footsteps are light and firm as he strides toward Adam. although it was a complete darkness, he is being stared at like a prey in a limpid pond.

"it's been 10 years guys… I'm really losing my mind in this endless event…" The young man whispered as he twistedly swings the bone towards the two.

The young Adam lounges as he saw him swings, but it was too late, the sharpened edge sliced his skin and shattered his pelvis. Before Adam loses consciousness, another swing hits his neck and ruptured the cervical spine separating his whole head from his torso.

"time to sleep little F*#k" said the young man as he disgustingly stares at the void where the Adam's head flew. He then turned his attention to the old man. His eyes are bloody red that flares in the darkness.

"you finally decided to end this?" Said the old man. "how many times have we met here?"

"This should be the 100th time" the young man answered. He stared at the old man, observing every inch of his movement as blood gushes off the old man's mouth. "This should be my 10th year in this abyss…"

"That long already huh?" The old man coughed as he tried to push himself to talk to him, "yeah… It's time for you to get out from here..."

"Goodbye Adam"

I started the story with this because I wanted to be able to stick in a single major conflict and wanted to end it with a resolution of the problem I previously created. As you guys read, there where 4 characters mentioned in this prologue, the granpa, the young Adam, The older Adam and the mythical creature that Grandpa was staring at. The next story lines would be a mix of characters and mostly building up on what is the new world looks like, how the society functions, etc., and by starting the story with this, I wanted the readers to understand that no matter how questionable the next chapters are, it will circle back to the conflict of this 4 Characters.
