Chapter 35

“I think I’ve always been yours, Adam.” Phoenix looked down as he played with the silverware, and then said, “You know the other day when I went out to see Pastor Bell to make arrangements for the Townsend funeral?”

“Yeah. What about it?”

“I bought me some of that redemption they hand out in those places.”

“That’s great, Phoenix, but you can’t buy redemption. It’s free. If he charged you—”

“No, he didn’t charge me. I guess I put that wrong. I meant to say that after paying for the funeral I talked to the reverend about this redemption stuff, and before I left, I understood everything. It’s really amazing, isn’t it? But I guess I’m not telling you anything you don’t already know.”

“It feels good, doesn’t it?”

“It sure does,” Phoenix said. “By the way, I’ve been thinking. Since we’re not in hiding anymore—”

“Stop right there,” Adam said. “Not in hiding anymore? Phoenix, we’ve weathered this storm, sure, but you need to know that we’ll always be looking over our shoulders.”
