Rael awoke to the soft light of dawn streaming through the dormitory window. He stretched, feeling the weight of the past days lifting slightly. The sounds of his roommates stirring brought him fully awake. He glanced over to see Zhatar sharpening a blade with meticulous care, Kwayur doing morning stretches, and Keita bustling around the small kitchenette.
"Good morning, everyone," Rael greeted, sitting up and rubbing the sleep from his eyes.
"Morning, Rael," Keita replied cheerfully. "Breakfast is almost ready. Hope you like eggs and toast."
Zhatar looked up from his blade, nodding a greeting. "Morning. Sleep well?"
"Well enough," Rael replied, joining them at the table.
As they gathered around the small table, the conversation flowed easily. Keita served the food, and they began to eat.
"So, what do you all know about the academy?" Rael asked, curious to learn more about his new environment.
Kwayur leaned back, sipping his drink. "I've heard the head of the academy, Gyro Blitten, is from the renowned Blitten family. They've always been the directors here."
Zhatar nodded. "Yeah, the family has led the academy for generations, ever since it was founded by Tyron Blitten. It's said that their magical knowledge is unparalleled."
Rael looked intrigued. "What about the teachers? Are they as impressive?"
Keita chimed in, "Absolutely. Some of the best magical minds teach here. We'll be learning from experts in every field."
"And the equipment?" Rael asked. "I've heard they have some high-profile magical instruments."
Zhatar's eyes lit up. "Oh, definitely. They have state-of-the-art gear. It's part of what makes this place so prestigious."
Kwayur added, "It's not just about the equipment. The curriculum is rigorous. They push you to your limits."
After finishing breakfast, they packed their academy bags and set out for the main hall. As they approached, an announcement echoed through the magical wavelength system, instructing all freshers to gather in the hall.
Rael scanned the crowd and spotted Elara. A wave of relief and delight washed over him. He waved, and she waved back, a bright smile on her face. Keita, noticing the exchange, nudged Rael playfully.
"Who's the pretty girl?" he teased. "Someone special?"
Rael felt his cheeks warm. "Just an acquaintance," he muttered, but the knowing looks from his roommates told him they weren't convinced.
The hall filled quickly with students, the air buzzing with excitement and anticipation. Suddenly, an elderly man stepped onto the stage and cleared his throat, silencing the crowd. It was the director, Gyro Blitten.
"Welcome, new students," he began, his voice carrying authority and warmth. "You stand here today because you are the best and brightest. The Manoshka Academy is the pinnacle of magical education, and you should be proud to be part of it."
He went on to introduce the councilors, teachers, and various dignitaries. When he introduced the representatives of the noble faction, Rael's attention sharpened. Among them stood Karrina Roison, slender and tall, with a captivating smile and striking blonde hair. The crowd seemed entranced by her beauty, but for Rael, it was a reminder of the pain and loss inflicted by her family.
He clenched his fists, memories of his parents' death flooding back. The urge to strike was overwhelming, but he knew he had to control himself. The Roisons had elite bodyguards, and any rash action could jeopardize his mission.
Karrina's eyes scanned the crowd and briefly met Rael's gaze. She seemed to sense something unusual, but before she could react, the principal concluded his speech.
"May this year be prosperous for all of you," Gyro Blitten said, dismissing the students.
As the crowd dispersed, Rael and Karrina turned their backs to one another. Karrina, heading back home, couldn't shake the feeling that there was something different about the young man in the crowd. Rael, on the other hand, felt a renewed sense of purpose. He had finally seen his target up close, and he knew he had to start planning his moves carefully from now on.
With determination burning in his eyes, Rael walked away, ready to face the challenges ahead and bring justice to those who had wronged him.
