Sovereign of the abyss

When fourteen-year-old Gwyn Brei is sent on a year-long mountainside retreat to train, he wonders if it’s the chance he’s been looking for -- a chance to prove that he’s more than just another kid from the small village of Serec. Training with his mother’s old adventuring partner, however, it doesn’t sound like the path to glory Gwyn imagined. But when an unexplained voice enters the scene, events are set in motion that Gwyn was utterly unprepared for. updates are semi-frequent

Unexpected training indecent

After eating, Teacher passed me a blunt short sword. "Now we train," he said while grabbing his own blunt short sword and taking a battle stance. With his sword in his right hand and the other stretched out to his left, he moved his left foot backward and his right foot slightly forwards. I took a similar stance to him, opting to place both hands on my sword instead. Teacher taunted me with his free hand so I charged him, bringing my sword down in an overhead slash, he easily sidestepped to the right then hit me in the gut with his sword. I staggered, holding my gut. "You leave yourself too open," Teacher said as if he was evaluating me.

"Yeah yeah," I replied back. Teacher came in to hit me, it was a jab to my left, I managed to dodge it by jumping back but his strikes didn't stop, as soon as I landed from my jump a slash was coming to my right, I tried to block it with my sword but he was too strong, I was knocked back, landing on the ground and rolling. I jumped up again, the pain in my arms from blocking the strike gave me a new sense of commitment. 'One good hit, just one good hit,' I said to myself. I met Teacher's gaze and then dashed towards him, I don't know why but he flinched, I didn't care though as it just gave me a better chance of getting him. I picked up speed, fast enough that even Teacher, a B++ adventurer, couldn't keep up. I was right behind him before we both knew it, I felt as though something took over my body. I couldn't think rationally. All I could think about was killing him.

-James point of view-

The kid got back up. His arms must have been in immense pain after blocking that hit, even so, he was still getting up. I smiled. 'Kid has tenacity I'll give him that.' Then there it was: that smile, that damned smile, and a crazy bloodlust. 'How the hell could a kid like him have such murderous intent?!' I yelled in my mind. He ran at me so fast he was a blur. I didn't notice him till he was behind my back, even then I only knew he was there because I could feel that murderous intent. I spun around, ready to deflect any hits, he went for a jab to my left as I had done before. As I moved my sword to block, he dropped the sword to his left hand and stabbed my gut. They were dull blades but that didn't mean they didn't hurt like hell. After stabbing my gut, he struck at my exposed Achilles tendon, narrowly missing as I managed to lift my foot, throwing off my balance. As he smiled even bigger than before, I realized had fallen right into his trap. He released his sword as it went into the ground, using the upward momentum to pull it out with his other hand, the upward arc was heading straight for my hand. He wanted to disarm me. I couldn't get my hand out of the way in time; his blade hit my wrist and I dropped my blade. He promptly picked it up with his free hand. By the time I had regained my balance it didn't matter because he was swinging both swords at me; I could barely keep up. For every hit I blocked he hit ten more, 'He's trying to kill me! I have to do something,' I thought to myself, then I realized, magic. I could use earth and water magic to make him lose his balance then enclose him in dirt.

I steeled my nerves and tried to cast a spell, but before I could finish he jumped out of the way as if he knew it was coming. I knew I had to work around that. Just as I was about to cast again, the kid started to cast the same two spells I just cast, only much faster. In a split second the ground below me gave out and I was stuck up to my neck in dirt. I tried to break out but it was too strong, I had to either use my own magic to get out or incapacitate him. As I prepared to cast a spell, he leaped at me -- it was perfect, he couldn't dodge mid-air. Just as he was about to stab me, flattened spikes of earth shot up and knocked him out. When he fell unconscious his magic released me and he fell on top of me. I picked him up and took him to the tent.
