Damn! He was gorgeous!
She usually did not trust just any man. She had many suitors, but she seldom went on a date. If she did agree, she had never gone on a second date.
After Jonathan, she knew it would be hard to trust anyone again. Besides, she could not just jump from one relationship to another. She had to be careful for her son's sake.
Noah? Noah Maxwell? Who again is he?
It seemed he was famous since her friends appeared to know him quite well. But why did his name still not ring a bell in her head? However, his face told her a different story, especially his eyes.
It was like when she forgot what she had to say, but she believed it was at the tip of her tongue. That was what she felt as she looked at the man beside her.
Those damn beautiful expressive eyes.
She could not explain it. But she believed she had seen them in her dreams. Those eyes had haunted her in some way. But how? Why? What was her connection to this man?
But she swore she had not met him before. Maybe she had seen his pictures somewhere since he said he had appeared all over the internet. But still, she had no clue.
"Penny for your thoughts. Or should I ask if you like what you see?" He finally glanced her way when he stopped at the first red stop light.
Suddenly, she realized she had been quiet since she agreed to accept his offer. Moreover, she was also slightly mortified he just caught her ogling him.
"Oh, sorry. I didn't mean to stare, but I was just curious. You seem famous, but I..." She shook her head as nothing seemed to pop up.
But in her defense, she just wished to remember where she could have seen him before tonight. It was as if a puzzle piece had been missing inside her brain. And she just had to solve it.
"Honestly, it's refreshing to be with a beautiful woman who doesn't know my name," he laughed, letting out a genuine, hearty laugh.
"Wow, that is quite arrogant. Do you expect all women to fall all over you?" She was starting to think she might have made the mistake of thinking he was a decent guy.
Wow! Great job, Sky! You just found yourself another self-centered prick.
It appeared he was just another famous, arrogant jerk who liked the challenge of a chase. He probably saw her as another name to add to his conquest. Someone to discard once he had his fun.
"Well, not every woman, but it has been a while since someone appeared clueless... you know..." He said with a dismissive shrug before returning his eyes to the road as the green light flashed before their eyes.
"Oh! You are that famous, ha!" She could not help but be curious since she still had no idea who he was. "Do you mind if I check you online?"
"Sure, go ahead!" He glanced at her again before he turned to another corner. He was visibly amused as a smirk appeared on his lips.
She grabbed her phone and waved it to him. "I just need to see what the fuss is all about." She explained, but he only boyishly smiled as if entertained by her curiosity.
"Yeah! Maybe I am a notorious criminal. Or the serial killer that everybody's been searching for." He impishly said that seemed to make him more adorable than frightening.
But, of course, she seriously doubted that he was anything like that. Her friends would have warned her to stay away from him if they knew who he was.
No! He must be an actor or something.
Or a rich asshole who did not know what to do with his money. That would explain the expensive car, clothing, and watch he wore and his exuding confidence.
She was about to type his name on the search button, but he stopped her as his hand covered her phone screen. "You know what..."
She had to put her phone down to look at him, wondering what he had in mind. "What?"
"What if we keep our identities a surprise? I meant I like that you don't know me, and I don't know anything about you." He tried to explain.
"In this way, we can get to know each other the traditional way." He quickly added. "What about you join me for a late snack? I know a place where they make a great sandwich."
He stopped again at another red light before turning to look at her. Of course, she was hesitant. It was already strange that she accepted a ride home.
But to go for a late snack with a stranger. "Hmm!" She knew alarming bells should start ringing in her head. But so far, she seemed more excited than scared.
"I know I said I could be a criminal. But I swear I am a good boy. Just like I promise, I will keep my hands to myself." He even raised his hands, letting go of the wheel as he swore to her.
"Hands back on the wheel." She hastily reminded him that he was driving. "Focus your eyes on the road." She added when he kept looking at her.
She did not want to end up in an accident. She still had a child to think about. She could not leave Noel orphaned. Her poor child was already fatherless. He could not lose a mother, too.
"Easy, we are barely moving." He returned his hands to the wheel, pointing that a traffic build-up was slowing them down. "Don't worry, we are just a block away." He pointed to the other side of another stoplight.
"Fine. But we are just having a sandwich, nothing else." She raised her eyebrows at him, wondering if she was doing the right thing by trusting him.
She did not understand why, but she never once felt threatened by his presence. On the contrary, she had never felt more comfortable around him. Even safe.
"I promise a sandwich, but I hope you won't object to a drink, too." He smoothly maneuvered the car on the almost empty vacant lot and parked it near the entrance.
"But if you want more, I would not object to oblige." He winked at her before turning off the engine. "We're here."
"I don't doubt it. But let us stick to a sandwich and a drink." She forced a smile on her lips as she looked at their destination. "Wait! Are you sure we are in the right place?"
