Chapter 64
Chris took his phone from his pocket and handed it to Kedlin. “Call 911.” He pressed the towel against James’s shoulder and winced as James groaned. “Sorry.”
“I need the police,” Kedlin said into the phone, “and an ambulance at 3247 South Wayfair. An officer has been shot and one attacker is dead. A second one got away and they have my granddaughter, Maddy.”
James rested his head against the wall and let out a deep breath.
Chris looked at the man on the floor at James’s feet. Blood soaked the man’s shirt. The mask had partially come off, exposing his dark features. It was Rick Dorsey, Steven’s cousin who the cops had been looking for.
His gaze locked with Rick’s blank stare, then he took a deep breath and focused on James. “You’re going to be okay.” 33
