Chapter 43

“That was risky today,” Chris said.

“We couldn’t let you get in trouble. Besides, it was kind of fun.” Dylan grinned.

“Well,” Chris said, “as I was leaving Nolan’s, I saw a cop pull into his driveway. I don’t know if they took Nolan in.”

“We’ll find out.” Dylan tapped his hand on the counter, then walked out of the kitchen. Chris followed and then sat beside Ron on the sofa while Dylan paced his regular route from the front door to the kitchen and back.

After a long moment of uncomfortable silence, Chris said, “It may be awhile. I can fix dinner.”

Dylan nodded.

“Is there anything I can do?” Ron asked.

“No, it’s fine. I got it.” He went to the kitchen, took a skillet from the cabinet and set it on the stove, then stood there and let out a deep breath. It felt nice to have Dylan and Ron there, but what would James do when he saw them?

“Are you okay?”

Chris jumped at Ron’s soft voice, then smiled as he shook his head. “I didn’t hear you come in.”
