Chapter 37
After losing Garoutte as a suspect, Chris knew the day was going to be disappointing, but he’d never dreamed it would end this badly. Maybe he should have told James he was leaving town, but would that have changed anything? If James was trying to protect him, how would Chris know? Why hadn’t James been upfront about it?
Chris placed his hand over his heart and breathed out slowly. He couldn’t believe he had lost James. He sat down on the sofa and buried his face in his hands. 18
The bedroom was filled with morning light as Chris rolled onto his side and pulled the top sheet around him. After having been awake most of the night, he’d planned on staying in bed and letting the morning slip away, but now all he could think about was the angry tone in James’s voice the night before.
