Chapter 42: At the right time

Jackson's POV

"Yes, officer,I've been stabbed in an alleyway two weeks ago."

The officer's gaze shifted to Ericka, and then back to me.

"And what made you guys think that it's the patient who did this?" he asked, his pen poised over his notebook.

Ericka spoke up before I could answer.

"Because we don't have any possible enemies or a person who has a grudge against us," she said, her voice firm.

The officer raised an eyebrow. "That's quite a leap, isn't it?" he said, his tone skeptical. "Just because you guys don't have any obvious enemies doesn't mean that this patient is the one responsible."

I felt a surge of frustration at the officer's skepticism. "Think about it, officer," I said, trying to keep my voice calm. "The patient was recently escaped from the asylum. Escaped, and he's a murderer, and someone tries to kill Jackson here... it's too much of a coincidence."

Ericka nodded in agreement.

The officer sighed and rubbed his temples. "I understand your concerns, but I need concrete evidence before I can start investigating a suspect who's supposed to be locked away in a hospital." He looked at us both. "Can you tell me more about this patient? What's his background?"

Ericka and I exchanged a look, and then I spoke up.

"Not much is known about him"

"The only thing I know about him is his name, and I know you guys know about it too because of the report on the news." Ericka said.

I nodded, my mind racing back to the news report. "Ah, oh yeah," I said, trying to sound casual.

"What is it again?" I asked.

Ericka raised an eyebrow at me and looked at me like I was crazy.

"Seriously? You don't watch any news now?"

"Ugh, just tell me what it is"

"It's Diego"

Diego's POV

I stood in the shadows, watching Jackson and Ericka as they conversed with the police officer. My eyes burned with anger as I gazed at the two of them.

This Jackson still didn't learn his lesson, I thought to myself.

I had already put a knife in his body, and yet he still dared to be with my Ericka. My mind was consumed by a maddening desire to be with her, to hold her close and never let her go.

"Wait for me, my love," I whispered. "I'm going to come and get you sooner or later, and we'll be together forever." I spoke softly to myself, my voice barely audible over the sound of the city.

The thought sent shivers down my spine as I felt a sense of excitement build within me.

And so, I continued to watch. The darkness seemed to swirl around me, drawing me in with its promise of power and control. I was Diego Diaz De Vivar, and I would stop at nothing to get what I wanted.

Ericka's POV

I felt it again, the same unsettling sensation that I had grown accustomed to over the past few weeks. It was as if someone was watching me, always lurking just out of sight. But this time, I was determined to play along, to make the person think that I was oblivious to his presence.

I continued to chat with Jackson and the officer, all the while keeping a subtle eye on my surroundings. When it was finally time to leave, I bid Jackson and the officer farewell, making sure to catch his eye and give him a reassuring smile.

"Don't worry about me, Jackson," I said, trying to sound casual. "I'll be fine. Just be careful on your way back home, okay?"

Jackson nodded, looking concerned, but I could tell he was suspicious.

I quickened my pace, making my way to the taxi stand. Once I had hailed a cab, I settled in for the ride to Jared's apartment.

I stepped into Jared's house, and my eyes scanned the room before landing on Jared. He was sitting on the couch, sipping a glass of water, and as he sensed my presence, he turned to me with a concerned look on his face.

"Hey, you okay?" he asked, setting his glass down on the coffee table.

I nodded, feeling a sense of exhaustion wash over me.

"Yeah, I'm just so tired," I said, plopping down onto the couch beside him.

"Did the authorities already sort it out about what happened to your ex-husband?" Jared asked.

"Not yet," I replied, my voice barely above a whisper. "And also Anna's," I added, feeling a wave of exhaustion wash over me.

Jared's brow furrowed in confusion.

"What do you mean Anna's?" he asked, his tone gentle but probing. "You only told me about Marco's earlier," he reminded me.

"Anna called," I said, my voice hinting at exhaustion. "She said that someone is going to kill them."

Jared's expression soften when he looked how exhausted I am.

"Okay, baby, let's just talk about this tomorrow, okay?" he said, his voice soft but reassuring. "Let's go to the bedroom now so you can rest properly."

I nodded, we stood up from the couch, Jared wrapped his arm around my waist and guided me towards the bedroom door. "Let's get some rest, okay?" he said, his voice gentle and soothing.

I nodded again, feeling my eyelids growing heavy as we entered the bedroom. Jared helped me get into bed and pulled the covers up to my chin. He leaned in and kissed my forehead, his lips warm and comforting.

"Get some rest, baby," he whispered. "We'll figure this out tomorrow."

"Come here, I want to feel your warmth," I said, my voice barely above a whisper.

Jared's smile grew wider as he lay down beside me, pulling me into his arms. "Goodnight, princess," he whispered, his fingers gently combing through my hair.

I smiled, feeling my eyelids growing heavier as I snuggled into the warmth of his embrace. "Goodnight," I whispered back, my voice barely audible.

I felt Jared's gentle strokes on my hair, his soft whispers in my ear, and the comforting pressure of his arms around me. It was a sense of peace and security that only came from being with him.

A sense of peace wash over me as I drifted off to sleep.
