Chapter 10

A sigh cut through the car like it was an actual knife hissing through the air, and Jack reached up to tug off the glasses that hid his eyes. “Enjoying the view?”

Mason grinned, embarrassed, and turned back to the windshield. “Yes, actually. I was.”

“Good to know.” Sunglasses clattered on to the dashboard and Jack peered through the glass. “Where are we?”

“Just past Beaverton and branching off towards Kirkfield. We’ll follow that road up through Haliburton.”

He could feel Jack’s eyes on him as Jack mumbled, “Oh, goody. So is that where we’re going then?”

“Past that. A little lakefront property off Baptiste Lake.”

“Of course,” Jack drawled. “Baptiste Lake. Remind me again where exactly I’d find that on a map when I have to call the authorities to save me.”

Mason frowned, “Why in the hell would you even—”

“I’m just saying. I mean we’re already in the middle of butt-fuck nowhere. And it’s kind of creepy. I miss the city already.”
