Chapter 63

“No, whoever it was is long gone.”

Nick looked like he was going into shock.

Cam looked around. There were no telephones in sight. She felt in her pockets, but her phone wasn’t there. Then she remembered having placed the phone under the passenger seat. She reached up and tried the car door, but it was locked. Stupid! She chastened herself. The window was shattered and was gaping wide open.

Cam reached carefully into the car and unlocked the door. Then trying to avoid being cut by the cubes of broken glass all over the front seat, she reached across and withdrew her phone from beneath the seat. Flipping it open, she dialed 911.

“I need the police and an ambulance. There’s been a shooting,” she reported when the emergency worker answered the phone.

“Where are you?” the emergency operator asked.

Cam looked around. Where were the numbers on these damned buildings? Finally, she spotted one across the street. She gave the number to the operator.
