As if he felt Adam’s intent stare, he looked up. “I think she’s going to be all right. The wounds are a few days old and already starting to heal. I’d say she tangled with a coyote or even a couple of them, but somehow got away. Maybe someone drove up and they spooked. I’ll give her some antibiotics and gradually up her food and water intake to be sure she has enough milk for the pups. I can start them on puppy food in a couple of weeks, too. This is my first rescue. I’m pretty psyched!”
Such enthusiasm was contagious. Adam had to answer Mike’s grin with one of his own.
“How did you get into this shit, anyway?” Even as he asked, he could see the shutters drop behind Mike’s eyes as the grin faded. Oh shit, I stumbled into something that’s touchy and none of my business. He had time to suck in a fast breath before Mike framed a non-committal answer.
