The night was moonless and the only sound in the prison yard was the distant hoot of an owl. All inmates had planned this jailbreak meticulously, and now was the moment they had been waiting for.
One of the inmates, who was resourceful and wiry, had managed to fashion a makeshift lockpick from a stolen paperclip. He crouched in the shadow of the prison wall, hidden from the watchful eyes of the guards in the tower. Beside him, two other inmates , equally determined to escape, kept a lookout. This occurred in other cells as well.
He worked deftly, his hands shaking with anticipation. The lock on the outer gate was an old one, and it took just a few more seconds before the satisfying click echoed in the quiet night.
The gate slowly creaked open, and the trio in each cell slipped through it like shadows. Their hearts pounded, and the fear of being caught fueled their every movement.
