After he won the bet, Elaine became more reserved around him. She had originally spoken her mind around him because she had thought that she could beat me up if he ever told anybody, but that was proven false.
Finally, Friday arrived, the day of the test where we had to be able to control an element.
Most of the kids spent the whole week preparing for it. Taiga had come to realize that the standard of the academy was way too low. It turned out that most of the kids got into the academy by showing prowess in fighting skills, having magic was just considered a secondary requirement, as the academy told everyone that they were the best a teaching magic, so all of the nobles refrained from teaching their kids magic, wanting them to learn from the great teachers of the academy. (Obviously, the commoners never had the option to learn magic anyways.)
They each demonstrated their magic, starting from the first rank, Elaine, and then going in descending order.
When it was time for his turn, Taiga just conjured a simple flame whilst reciting the incantation so that nobody would find out about how an incantation was not needed.
When Elaine saw that Taiga had made a flame so easily, she again fell into deep thought.
'Taiga already has great control over flame magic already, you can see it in how easily he summoned the flame. But, he never practiced once when I was with him, is he practicing after I fall asleep? Again, this strengthens the theory that Taiga isn't just a random commoner, maybe his noble dad gave him a tutor?'
After everyone had finished, the rank 15 noble was expelled, while 4 of the commoners were expelled.
Then the weekend came.
As they had the weekend off, he and Elaine parted ways. He immediately went back down into the town. Elaine was actually taking this opportunity to tail him, to see if any of her theories were correct.
She saw him enter a public restroom. Today, he was dressed in his usual outfit, pure white pants with a pure white hoodie with the hood down showing his platinum silver hair. She waited there for 30 minutes, but only saw a mysterious person in a completely black trench coat with the hood up and a completely black mask coming out of the public restroom.
After another 30 minutes had gone by, she wondered if the guy in the dark trench coat was actually Taiga but quickly dismissed the idea, as she knew that Taiga had a pure white mask, while the mysterious man had a completely black mask on.
'Auuugh!' she said slapping her forehead. 'What if he went out a window because he noticed me following him. How could I be so careless?' she lamented.
By now, Taiga was sitting at a dining table at "The Sun Fairy" waiting for his sister. He knew the moment his sister entered a 50 yard radius because he had learned what she looked like and how she walked from spending so much time with her, she was probably the only person that Taiga could see to that extent. He had even been able to make out most of the basic features of her face under her mask, but it was still a little blurry.
He disappeared from his spot and reappeared next to his sister. Sensing his presence, Raia didn't respond and just started walking toward the city tombs, as this was their planned out destination for today.
"Awwwww, come on, you're no fun," whined Taiga.
"It's not like you can sneak up on me anymore, it stopped working on me since we were 7."
"I know, I know, it's just that I believe that one day, I'm going to get you again."
Taiga was actually very surprised with Raia, as he assassin skills were definitely not lacking, and he had snuck around other people to test if his skills were working and they did work on other people, just not Raia.
Raia, in fact, actually couldn't sense his presence, at least not in the usual way. She just had a "Taidar" where she instinctively knew whenever Taiga was around. She just dismissed it as something that grew with their relationship, but Taiga thought that it was really interesting.
After catching up with each other and telling each other stories about what had happened on their first weeks of school, they arrived at the tombs.
The tombs were part of some ancient empire and contained a lot of treasures in them, and they were also open to the public! It was just that the deeper you went, the more confusing the maze of tunnels became and the deadlier the traps were.
Most people never walked past the 1st floor and the lowest floor that anybody had ever gotten to was the 4th floor. Of course, Taiga planned on finding his way to the 5th floor, as he knew that it was about time he got some rare equipment. They paid their 20 bronze fee and descended into the tunnels. The further they went, the less people they saw, and the more eerie the tunnels became.
Taiga was busy searching for hidden room and compartments, as even the first floor had some good items.
Raia wasn't that surprised when she saw Taiga finding hidden rooms and compartments because she had already suspected that he had a skill that let him "see" better than people with normal eyes even though he was basically blind with his mask. As she knew this, she also knew the reason why they hadn't stepped into any traps yet because all she had to do was step in the exact places that Taiga stepped and do the same things he did.
They quickly reached the second floor, and then the third floor, with Taiga finding some interesting things here and there, but for some reason, all of the weapons were already taken and all he could find where materials.
At some points, Raia made a mistake and Taiga would have to save her after noticing something weird with the vibrations. Also, the traps became harder to detect, so Taiga spent two more hours on the third floor than on the second floor before finally reaching the fourth floor.
At this point, Taiga already knew that it was well past sunset, but both of them had been prepared to spend a night in the tunnels. Taiga set to making a tent in the middle of the 4th floor while Raia focused on making a barrier with her holy magic. They quickly ate a cold dinner and then retired to the tent.
After laying down side by side, Raia decided that she would ask her brother the question that had been bugging her.
"Brother, I'm wondering, but it seems like you are not that well known in the Battlemage Academy. I mean, you surprised everyone with your talents during the tests, but I heard some rumors that you disappeared."
"You don't have to worry about anything, I just wanted to hide my strength a little because I don't want to make unnecessary enemies that are jealous of me."
"But couldn't you just beat them with your overwhelming strength brother?"
"You are a little too naive sister, you must know that strength isn't the only thing in this world. We must also survive in the world of politics. Well, it is late now, we must rest if we want to have enough energy for tomorrow, good night."
"Ok, good night brother," Raia said, accepting her brother's explanation.
The next morning, we proceeded to make our way to the 5th floor which I had long ago sensed from the vibrations was the last floor, containing the tomb room.
As they were reaching the end of the 4th floor, Taiga noticed something strange starting to happen. The ground beneath their feet starting shaking, and then a hole started appearing in the ground, getting bigger with each passing second, threatening to swallow them whole.
Then, Taiga felt nothing below his feet, looking down, he dropped like a stone and then listened to his sister's screams the whole way down.
