Maya waited for Riya to come back to their room so that she could tell her everything she had heard. She did not know precisely what the relationship between them was but she did not want Riya to be thrown into the pack of wolves. Sometimes teenagers for not like humans but like wolves. They tore your dignity and shredded it into pieces.
And also, so she knew that Riya's experience was not very good in the school. She did not want her to experience the same pain she had in her last life. It was good that Maya I was Reborn again. What use was her rebirth if she could not help a friend?
She kept playing with the gift Nirup gave and waited for a long time. It was nearly midnight when Riya came back.
"Where were you? I was worried sick. Care to explain yourself?"
"You are acting like my uncle."
Maya realized that he was acting like an adult. She was actually an adult in her previous life and she was also very much worried about Riya. All the questions she asked were really important. She wasn't acting like some guardian. Yes, she wasn't, Maya consoled herself.
"I was out working."
"Thank God, "Maya whispered.
"What was that?"
Riya asked back.
"What was what?" Maya yelled back this time.
"You are acting weird. Way more than your normal weird. Tell me what's going on?"
Seeing her serious face, Maya couldn't give any more excuses. She had to talk now.
"I overheard something."
"OK, then what was it? You wouldn't be this cautious if there was nothing in your eavesdropping message. And seeing your weird actions, it should be about me. Am I right?"
"You are, "I had to give it to her. She caught on to it almost instantly.
"They said that the person you are hanging out with could be possibly involved with some other girl who is very much feared by everyone else."
Maya waited for those words to sink in. She was worried that Riya would not be able to handle it.
"You could have told me that in Simple sentences. Why did you have to belong it that long?"
That was something she did not expect. Her focus was obviously not on important things. Why should sleep remember her long sentence when she could have focused on the meaning?
Maybe he was not willing to focus on the meaning. That's why she turns the conversation around focusing on her action.
Maya quickly hugged her and patted her back showing her support.
"You don't have to act strong. You know you are scared and I know that too. We will figure this out."
Maybe, Riya was so dumbfounded by these words, that she was still for a moment. But when her brain caught up, she immediately separated herself from Maya.
"Whoa. Whoa. Whoa. What exactly are you telling me?"
Her bewildered stare became proof of Maya's hypothesis. She felt like she was right.
"Let me tell you right now. I am not scared. And I'm definitely not trying to make you forget this conversation. You don't have to worry about me. I know how to deal with things. I just need you to do one thing for me. Please, I am begging you, stay out of this."
There could not be any more desperate attempt at begging from her in Maya's view. She knew that she had to help Riya. So, she acted like she had given up and did not care about it and went to sleep.
She was listening to sounds from under the blanket.
Riya stayed there for some time before going to her bed. She seemed to be deciding whether to trust Maya or not. Riya definitely did not know that Maya would never stop being nosy. And that they were on completely different frequencies in the previous conversation. But this gave her a life lesson for later.
The next day, Maya was early for class. Nirup was surprised but he did not say anything. That did not mean that Maya would keep quiet.
"We have to do something."
Then she told Nirup everything.
"I am not doubting you but where did you know about this? Maybe something was translated wrong during the communication?"
Maya was not happy to hear this. She could not tell that her Goldfinger give this information. But he had to find a suitable way to lie about it.
"I have it from a very trusted source."
"And would that trusted source, be you? Nirup ask her like he was declaring something.
"Haha. Very funny. I am telling you; you have to believe me on this."
Maybe her sincere eyes were very pitiful, but he acquiesced.
"Then what you're crazy, uh, I mean good plan to deal with this?"
Maya noticed his slip up but she did not focus on that. She did not have time to waste.
"So here is the thing. We have to find out who the girl they are talking about is. And the reason she will deal with my roommate Riya. And the most important thing is what the reaction of the guy involved between the two girls will be when he knows about this. If he is not good enough, then I won't agree to the marriage contract between him and my roommate."
"I don't think it's your business to deal with a marriage contract that doesn't concern you. Because you are not the person involved in it, you cannot do anything about it." Maya gives him a glare which was fierce enough that he shut up.
"Do you know that guy?"
Nirup look at her like she was crazy.
"I don't know your roommate. How would I know who her fiancé was?"
Oh, right. He did not know anything about that. And neither did she.
So how could she find information about this matter?
She conveniently left out the disguise warning Riya gave her. Because he was so engrossed in it, she did not pay attention to any of the classes. Good thing the professor did not care about students.
But Nirup it was a good student. He med notes about everything and gave them to her.
"You are such a good guy. Thank you."
"I just hope that you will stop working on your conspiracy theory and do something else."
There went her good impression of him. He would not take a compliment like a compliment. He had to add something to it and make her regret it.
"How about we follow that guy?"
"We are not stalking anyone," Nirup interrupted.
"I am just saying we will follow him and see what he does every day."
"Do you think that that is different from stalking?"
Ok fine, he had a point there.
"Then how will I know if he is serious about my friend or not? I don't want him to bring any trouble to her. Boys are trouble."
"Like you are not. I just had to persuade you to stop stalking someone."
Why did he have to tell the truth every time? It made her look bad.
"Then what do you suggest me do now?"
Nirup answered readily.
"Give her space. You told her already and she is perfectly capable of dealing with her issues herself. If he needs your help, she will definitely tell you."
Even if Maya had not listened to Riya's words, she couldn't do the same to Nirup. He was serious and meant business.
"Let's go to eat lunch."
On their way, Maya found a very important opportunity.
She pulled Nirup into a supply closet to eavesdrop because that place was very remote. It was all due to her gossip ears, the superpower of the week. She had heard them talking before she saw them and that's why she could take action this fast.
"That girl is so stupid. She can have Happiness now. And later she will become the same as that insane dropout. "
One of the girls was telling the other one.
"Serves her right to think about the guy our boss is crazy about."
The other one answered.
They could hear only these sentences hiding in the closet. Maya was very happy e because her theory was confirmed. She was gloating and she wanted to see the embarrassment on Nirup's face because he was wrong.
That's when she realized that they were so close In the Closet. She quickly opened the door and went out.
They were quiet the whole way back.
She did not know how to start the conversation now because their Vibe was weird.
She cleared her throat twice but choked on her words.
"That-"
"You-"
Both spoke at the same time.
The weirdness continued.
"You were right. We have to do something. Tell me your plan."
Maya would have answered sarcastically if the previous awkwardness did not happen to them.
She felt like they had to ignore whatever had happened everything become normal. Or at least till she graduated and the Tribe was saved.
"So, we have to find the information about your friend's fiancé. It will be a very hard task."
Not less hard than ignoring whatever she was feeling for him.
Maybe this time her schooling will be definitely different.
