Chapter 14

For a moment, Libs felt bad, the emotion curling up as something frigid and cold in his gut. He’d forgotten about Stella, that she might have been the one to bear the brunt of Jane’s rage yesterday. It could have been her, and he hadn’t warned her to steer clear. They owed each other that much, simply for both being the reluctant minions of a madwoman. They understood one another’s situation and knew what it was like to follow orders they didn’t like.

Thankfully, Stella looked fine, showing no signs of abuse, and Liberty was ridiculously relieved. Her dark eyes fixed on him, and she raised her brows in question. He tried to convey with his eyes that he was sorry for forgetting, and she dipped her chin in acknowledgement.

Jane raised her eyes, her movements languid.

“Go stand by Stella, Libby darling. We’re waiting on a report from someone.”

He settled in next to Stella, crossing his ankles and looking down at the top of her head.
