A wave of Psychic energy, almost tangible, tore through the mist above the lake, instantly snapping several large trees at their midsections about ten meters away, and finally blasting a large crater into the ground.
As debris and dust flew toward him, Rowan quickly shouted, "Don't worry about me! When you get back, don't report this to the League or contact Officer Jenny—it'll be either too late or useless. Notify Reid immediately, tell him what's going on here, and have him come as fast as possible. Hurry!"
Without further explanation, Rowan forcefully pushed the others away and chose to move in the opposite direction, deliberately making a lot of noise to attract the attention of the legendary Pokémon above the lake.
Only by keeping it near Lake Verity could he ensure the safety of those retreating, while also preventing any further impact on other areas.
This maneuver quickly caught the Pokémon's attention. A strong wind blew across the lake, and the silhouette hidden within the mist began pursuing him.
However, to Rowan's surprise, the Pokémon stopped following him after only a short distance. Then, an unsettling Psychic power began to rapidly gather.
In an instant, the mist covering the lake began to dissipate, and a black cloud, formed under the influence of Psychic energy, appeared above Lake Verity.
Terrifying waves of energy, reminiscent of lightning in a storm, flickered within the cloud.
"This feeling… is that Extrasensory?"
Rowan's usually expressionless face changed slightly as he witnessed the terrifying power that was now affecting the environment.
"To condense an intangible move to this extent… is this the kind of power that legendary Psychic-type Pokémon possess?" he murmured in disbelief.
Such an enormous Psychic-type move clearly wasn't aimed at him alone.
Given the current state, the entire Lake Verity and its surrounding area would likely be within the range of the attack.
Without hesitation, Rowan retraced his steps and moved rapidly toward the black cloud.
In this situation, running wasn't an option.
Since that was the case, his best chance was to try to stop the attack before it could be unleashed.
Rowan pulled out a special Poké Ball from his coat pocket, its exterior half-gold and half-white.
This was a replica of the GS Ball, recently developed by Professor Oak in Kanto. It contained a portion of the original's special abilities, designed to harness legendary power.
Originally, he had intended to use it only if the legendary Pokémon became weak or if there was no other choice, but now he had no other option, even though the chance of success seemed slim.
However, the fully charged move wasn't going to give him that opportunity. He had barely taken a few steps when the Psychic energy within the cloud erupted like an unbridled force.
Mesprit's Extrasensory expanded rapidly, using the center of Lake Verity as its focal point. In an instant, it swelled to an enormous size, like a giant pillar connecting the heavens and the earth, and exploded.
As the terrifying sight spread towards Rowan, enveloping him, a loud, commanding voice suddenly rang out.
"Flamethrower!"
The next moment, a huge torrent of blazing, red-hot flames shot out from nearby, lighting up the sky with its intense heat.
In an instant, the fierce fire tore a hole through the enormous pillar of Psychic energy, and within moments, it burned the entire move to ashes in the sky.
Rowan was momentarily stunned by this sudden turn of events, but quickly recovered.
A Fire-type move powerful enough to dispel an attack from a legendary Pokémon, along with that familiar voice...
Rowan turned his gaze toward the direction from which the voice and flames had come.
There, he saw a young man standing with a Typhlosion by his side. The man nodded toward him lightly, and Rowan visibly relaxed.
Since Reid had arrived, everything would be fine.
Reid, having confirmed that Rowan was safe, turned his attention toward the surface of Lake Verity.
Due to the earlier release of overwhelming Psychic energy, coupled with the heat from Typhlosion's Flamethrower, the mist covering the lake had completely dissipated.
Floating above the lake was a small Pokémon, resembling a fairy from Western mythology, with two leaf-shaped tails and four appendages growing from its head.
Memories and information about it surfaced in Reid's mind.
The legendary Pokémon, one of the Lake Guardians, a deity of emotion that granted humanity its feelings...
—Mesprit.
But now, it looked different from what he remembered.
It seemed to be in a very peculiar state.
Its body flickered between being almost transparent, with only its outline barely visible, and solid, where its form was clearly discernible.
Each of these changes appeared to be causing Mesprit great pain.
It clenched its eyes shut, furrowed its brow, and held its head tightly in its hands, occasionally letting out cries of agony as uncontrolled Psychic energy continuously surged outward.
Reid frowned slightly.
He had sensed something was off earlier while en route.
Having interacted with many Psychic-type Pokémon and trainers over the years, from Kanto's Sabrina to Unova's Caitlin, and even Sinnoh's Lucian, he was no stranger to experiencing their psychic powers firsthand in various emotional and mental states.
But Mesprit's repeated releases of Psychic energy, first in three consecutive bursts and later in scattered waves as he approached, differed from the usual fluctuations he had encountered.
It wasn't an illness, as Rowan had suggested, nor did it seem like a deliberate attack. Rather, it felt more like the result of a loss of control—Psychic power running wild.
In other words, Mesprit had gone berserk.
Yet, the thought of Rowan, with all his knowledge, misdiagnosing such an obvious case of berserk Psychic power as an illness left Reid a bit puzzled.
Had Rowan simply made a mistake? Or had the stress of recent work caused him to overlook something so crucial?
Either way, it seemed the Professor needed a break.
But before that...
Reid had to calm down the little Pokémon in front of him, who was clearly in the throes of a psychic rampage.
