Yet even this colossal space struggled to accommodate all the fans flocking to witness the Pokémon League's grand event.
Originally, The Indigo Stadium was less than 100,000 square meters, but as the number of Trainers and fans increased, the stadium expanded several times to its current size.
The Kanto League already had plans to extend it further, aiming for a capacity of 90,000 by next year, transforming it into a super-stadium of over 210,000 square meters.
While the future Indigo Stadium would boast advanced technology, the current setup was more straightforward. Without energy barriers to protect the audience, security relied on League staff's Pokémon to guard against stray attacks.
However, a new energy barrier system was in development, led by the renowned researcher, Bill. This barrier, still being tested, was said to withstand even Elite-level Pokémon attacks for up to ten minutes.
As Ash entered the stadium, following the passage to the stands, the sheer number of people left him in awe. The crowd's energy was contagious, making him feel both excited and nervous to compete before such a large audience.
The stadium was designed in an oval shape, with a high platform at the eastern end holding a giant torch for the opening ceremony.
Screens on the remaining three sides ensured every fan could see the action up close, while thousands more crowded outside the stadium to watch on outdoor screens, as tickets had sold out.
As evening approached, fireworks exploded across the sky, and exhilarating music echoed throughout the Indigo Plateau.
The stadium erupted in applause as the host appeared on the field, officially announcing, "Welcome to the Indigo Plateau Conference, the Pokémon League's grand event! Trainers from all around have gathered here to compete for the ultimate honor!"
"Becoming the League champion is more than fame—it's a step on the path to becoming a Pokémon Master!" the host declared. "And now, here comes the torchbearer!"
The camera focused on the torchbearer, a young woman jogging towards the stadium entrance with the torch held high, her presence met with a thunderous cheer that reverberated through the Indigo Stadium.
"It's incredible..." Ash murmured, overwhelmed by the enthusiasm in the stands. It was the first time he, Misty, and Brock had attended a League competition in person, and the magnitude of the opening ceremony alone left them speechless.
"The torch has journeyed through countless cities and passed through hundreds of hands to be here tonight. Now, it will light the way for the tournament!" the host continued, his voice alive with excitement.
In the crowd, Team Rocket watched from their disguised seats, each plotting in their own way. Jessie eyed the torch with interest. "That flame of Moltres... Should we try to snatch it and offer it to Giovanni?"
James quickly squashed the idea. "It's not the real Sacred Flame, Jessie. Besides, even if it was, do you think we could steal it under this level of security?"
Reluctantly, Jessie backed down, and even Meowth conceded after glancing at the League guards stationed nearby. "Yeah, maybe it's not worth it. Giovanni would abandon us for good if we messed up this big!"
As the torchbearer reached the stairs, the crowd cheered her on with renewed energy. Though visibly nervous, she managed a smile as she ascended toward the grand cauldron, where an official awaited to assist with lighting the torch.
The flame leapt from the torch and ignited the cauldron, blazing higher and higher as it took hold, drawing another wave of ecstatic cheers that shook the stadium to its core.
"And now, please welcome the esteemed President Charles Goodshow to commence the ceremony!" the host announced, as the camera panned to the passage where Goodshow, the beloved League founder, entered the stadium.
As the stadium quieted, Goodshow's voice boomed across the stands. "Every year, I stand here to remind us all that the League competition is about more than just victory. It's about camaraderie, respect, and a shared passion for Pokémon."
He paused, then raised his voice, "Trainers, battle with honor, dignity, and a true love for Pokémon. Show the world the spirit of the Indigo Plateau Conference!"
With a deep bow, he concluded, and the crowd's cheer erupted anew, filling the night sky and marking the start of an unforgettable tournament for the Kanto Region.
