•••••••••••••••••

Jessie leaned over the wicker basket of their hot air balloon, her mahogany hair fluttering wildly in the breeze.

"Go a little to the right," she directed.

She turned to her partners in crime, a smirk playing on her lips.

James, with his shoulder-length periwinkle hair and a white long-sleeve shirt emblazoned with a large red R, adjusted the controls next to Meowth. The small feline Pokémon, its cream-colored fur highlighted with brown at the tips of its hind paws and tail, looked up with its wide eyes shining in anticipation.

As their hot air balloon hovered directly over the Pokémon Center, Jessie checked their position and nodded.

"You two ready?"

Meowth grinned back, and James paused to smell his roses before pulling out a Pokéball.

"Make your entrance, Koffing!"

Koffing emerged in a burst of white light, quickly taking form as a spherical Pokémon filled with toxic gases. It hovered for a moment, its vacant eyes scanning the scene below, and its wide mouth curling into a grin, revealing two pointed teeth.

Without a moment's hesitation, Koffing began its descent towards the Pokémon Center, breaking through the calm skyline. As it approached the roof, it expelled a thick, noxious gas, the cloud billowing around it like a cloak of smog.

With a shared look of triumph, Jessie, James, and Meowth prepared their own descent.

"Let's go," Jessie said, pulling goggles over her eyes. They each grabbed a rope and leaped from the balloon, descending rapidly towards the chaos they had unleashed.

An urgent alarm blared throughout the Pokémon Center, cutting through the confusion.

"Attention please. Our Viridian City Radar System has detected a suspicious aircraft belonging to a gang of Pokémon thieves. If you have a Pokémon in your possession, exercise extreme caution."

A young trainer, her voice hoarse from the gas, managed to choke out, "What's going on?" amidst the chaos.

Jessie's laughter, sharp and mocking, filled the air as the visibility in the room continued to drop.

"We'll answer your question, little girl."

"Allow us to introduce ourselves," James announced, and together, they recited their creed:

"To protect the world from devastation."

"To unite all peoples within our nation."

"To denounce the evils of truth and love."

"To extend our reach to the stars above."

"Jessie!"

"James!"

"Team Rocket blasts off at the speed of light!"

"Surrender now or prepare to fight!"

"Meowth, that's right!" Meowth finished, striking a pose in front of them.

The trio grinned, reveling in the stunned expressions of the crowd gathered in the gas-filled room.

However, their triumph was short-lived.

Suddenly, the fire alarm cut through the smoky air, its loud, piercing sound startling everyone.

Immediately, sprinklers embedded in the ceiling activated, releasing a steady stream of water. The water cascaded down like rain, soaking everyone and everything below.

The effect on Koffing's gas was immediate. Water from the sprinklers began to combine with the toxic smoke, creating larger particles of soot that were too heavy to stay airborne.

As a result, the toxic cloud began to dissipate, clearing the air and reducing the immediate threat to the people and Pokémon in the room.

Jessie, with a menacing scowl, released her Ekans. The purple serpentine Pokémon hissed, its yellow eyes and underbelly stark against the smoke-filled room. The thick stripe around its neck and the rattle at the end of its tail highlighted its readiness to strike.

Nurse Joy, cornered and visibly trembling, could barely muster a response.

"I-I-I didn't do anything," she stammered, her voice barely above a whisper, her hands clutching at her uniform as if trying to find something solid to hold onto.

"Why don't you leave the beautiful nurse alone?" Austin called out, his voice deep and artificially lowered as he stepped into the back of the room. The moment those words left his mouth, he felt a wave of nerves hit him like a truck. Everyone turned to look at him—the kid with a freaking paper bag over his head, standing there like some weird, low-budget superhero.

He could almost feel his heart hammering in his chest as he dropped the two fire extinguishers onto the floor with a heavy thud. The sound echoed in the sudden silence of the Pokémon Center. Great. Just great. What the hell was he doing?

"Who are ya supposed to be?" Meowth's voice cut through the awkward tension. He squinted at Austin, clearly unimpressed.

"Bag Boy," Austin replied, his voice steady despite the adrenaline racing through his veins. He couldn't let them see how freaked out he was. This whole ridiculous plan hinged on him keeping his cool.

James casually sniffed his rose, his expression one of pure boredom. "We are warning you, kid, you'll get hurt if you try to play hero."

"Oh, you think darkness is your ally," Austin began, channeling his inner Bane and feeling more ridiculous with each word, but he had to keep going. Stalling was his only chance. "But you merely adopted the dark; I was born in it, molded by it. I didn't see the light until I was already a man, by then it was nothing to me but BLINDING! The shadows betray you because they belong to me!"

Silence. Awkward, unbearable silence. He could feel the sweat dripping down his back, the paper bag over his head suddenly feeling stifling. Everyone in the room just stared at him, expressions ranging from confusion to downright embarrassment. What was he even doing?

Nurse Joy, bless her heart, caught on quickly. He wasn't just spewing nonsense—he was buying time. And, thank Arceus, the sprinklers finally stopped spraying.

Austin took his chance and grabbed the fire extinguishers, his hands shaking a bit as he hefted them up. His eyes narrowed through the cut-out holes in the paper bag, and he squeezed the handles, blasting Koffing with a torrent of foam. The thick, white spray coated the gas Pokémon, who sputtered and spun around, completely caught off guard.

"Ekans, get him!" Jessie shrieked, her voice tinged with panic.

Ekans lunged at Austin, its body moving with that unsettling serpentine grace. He could feel his muscles tense, his heart pounding like a drum. But before he could react, a fierce Thundershock lit up the room.

The electricity struck Ekans, the water soaking its skin amplifying the effect. The snake Pokémon convulsed, its body twitching violently as the electric attack coursed through it.

Austin turned his head slightly, catching Pikachu's eyes. Despite everything, Pikachu had his back. That realization was oddly comforting, considering the mess he'd dragged them into.

Jessie's eyes were wide with shock as she watched Ekans writhe on the floor. "How is he not affected?" Her gaze darted to Austin's rubber gloves and boots, realization dawning on her face. She could almost see her mind racing, trying to figure out how he knew to prepare for their electric attacks.

Austin couldn't help the small smirk that tugged at his lips.

"Poison Sting!" Jessie yelled, desperation creeping into her voice. But Ekans was still paralyzed, its body quivering on the ground. It couldn't move, let alone attack.

"Again," Austin said, his voice calm despite the chaos swirling around them. Pikachu nodded, his cheeks sparking once more before he unleashed another Thundershock. The electricity crackled through the air, slamming into Ekans and sending it sprawling, completely knocked out.

"Now?!" James shouted, his eyes wide as he glanced at Meowth. The feline Pokémon nodded, darting forward with surprising speed.

"Thundershock on Koffing?!" Austin yelled out, panicking. Pikachu gave an alarmed "Pika?" in response but followed his command. Another blast of electricity shot out, slamming into Koffing just as it began spewing smog.

James barely had time to react before Koffing collided with him, the force of the impact sending him stumbling back, struggling to keep his balance.

Amidst the chaos, Austin felt a sharp, searing pain across his back. Meowth's claws raked through the fabric of his shirt, slicing into his skin. He gasped, the pain like fire spreading through his nerves. He could feel the warmth of blood soaking into his shirt, and the tears stung his eyes, dampening the paper bag. It took everything in him not to cry out.

"Crying isn't gonna save ya," Meowth sneered, his voice taunting. He leapt forward, claws outstretched again.

Austin barely managed to stretch out his hand, opening a Pokéball in pure reflex. Spearow burst forth in a flash of light, his angry squawk filling the room. Meowth stumbled back, momentarily startled.

"Birds are Meowth's prey," he hissed, regaining his composure, his eyes narrowing.

"You hear that?" Austin muttered through gritted teeth, the pain in his back making every word a struggle. "Let's show them the true strength of a Great Spearow."

Spearow's eyes gleamed with a fierce intensity, his small body vibrating with pent-up energy. Despite everything, he seemed to understand—this was his fight.

With a sharp cry, he took flight, diving towards Meowth with incredible speed. His beak struck true, slamming into Meowth and sending the cat Pokémon crashing into the ground with a dull thud.

"Thundershock," Austin commanded, his voice barely steady. Pikachu's cheeks sparked, the room filling with the crackling sound of electricity building.

Meowth looked up, panic flashing in his eyes. "Now wait just a min—"

His plea was cut off by a surge of electricity coursing through him, his body convulsing as the Thundershock took hold. The smell of burnt fur filled the air, and Austin winced, feeling a pang of guilt despite everything.

Jessie and James scrambled to grab Meowth, their faces pale as they realized they were beaten. "You haven't seen the last of us, kid!" they shouted, retreating with a stumbling haste.

Nurse Joy couldn't help but press her face against the window, curiosity getting the better of her as she watched the unfolding debacle outside. There, James frantically jumped onto a bicycle, his movements clumsy and rushed. Jessie followed, leaping onto the back with less grace than a sack of potatoes hitting the ground.

"Pedal, James, pedal!" Jessie screamed, her words punctuated by sharp pats on James's back, much like a jockey spurring on a racehorse.

James, driven more by Jessie's urgency than the actual need for speed, began pedaling with wild fervor. His legs moved in a blur, the bike wobbling dangerously under the mismatched weight and coordination of the two.

Meanwhile, a paralyzed Meowth, held carelessly by Jessie, dangled from her hand like a limp ragdoll.

Nurse Joy turned to thank the young man who had saved the center, only to find him gone. Nearby lay a busted extinguisher with foam gushing out, clearly meant as a distraction.

"Be a fucking hero, they said," Austin muttered through gritted teeth, wincing as he cleaned the cuts and bruises on his arms. The small room he was holed up in was simple, almost bare. He'd considered going to Nurse Joy for help but quickly dismissed the idea. Revealing myself as Bag Boy could attract Team Rocket's attention. And the last thing I needed was more of those psychos sniffing around.

"Fuck."

Pikachu, perched on the bed, gave him a puzzled look, a little sweatdrop forming on his forehead as he watched Austin curse under his breath. Spearow, completely unbothered, continued preening his feathers, not a care in the world. Must be nice to be that oblivious.

Then there was a soft knock at the door. Austin's heart jumped into his throat, and he froze, glancing at Pikachu and Spearow. They went silent, sensing the sudden tension.

"Bag Boy?" Nurse Joy's voice filtered through the door. Austin's stomach dropped. Shit. He cringed, staring at the door as if he could will her away. Why did she have to use that name?

Taking a deep breath, he cracked the door open, just enough to see her standing there, holding a medical kit and wearing a knowing smile.

"I don't know what you're talking about."

"Of course," she replied. "Let me help you, for helping us."

Damn it. Austin hesitated, the words sticking in his throat. But when he looked at her, really looked at her, he saw something in her eyes—gratitude, worry, maybe a bit of understanding.

"Just don't tell anyone. I don't want Team Rocket after me," he whispered, stepping back and opening the door wider to let her in.

She nodded, that same understanding in her eyes as she stepped inside. The door closed softly behind her, and she set her kit on the small table. Her hands were gentle, practiced, moving with a care that made him feel safe. She cleaned each cut carefully, the antiseptic stinging more than he'd like to admit, and then bandaged the wounds with expert precision.

"How did you know that attack was going to happen?"

His mind raced, scrambling for something believable. "I, uh, I was coming back from the bookstore," he lied, trying to keep his voice steady, "and I overheard those two planning the attack."

Nurse Joy paused, frowning slightly, her eyes searching his face like she could see through the bullshit. Austin tensed, waiting for her to call him out, but she didn't press it. The boy hadn't proclaimed himself a hero, demanded anything, or sought recognition. He had simply helped, gotten hurt, and then tried to hide. Choosing to believe his words, Nurse Joy continued her work in silence.

"Why didn't you tell me?" she asked, her voice softer now, more concerned than suspicious.

"Would you have believed me?" Austin shot back, a bit sharper than he intended. His shoulders sagged as he looked away. "I just… I didn't want to take the chance. And what if I was wrong?"

She finished wrapping his arm, her hands lingering for just a second longer than necessary. "Why did you help us?"

The question hung in the air between them, and Austin found himself struggling for an answer. Why did he help? Because he knew what would happen if he didn't? Because he couldn't just stand by and let his pokemon get stolen?

"Do I need a reason to help?"

Her eyes softened, a small, warm smile tugging at her lips. "No," she said quietly, and Austin could see she meant it. Then she reached into her kit and pulled out a small glass bottle with a spray cap, the liquid inside shimmering a soft, vibrant blue.

"I know this isn't much, but this is a Max Potion," she said, holding it out to him. "A thank you for being a hero."
