Chapter 35

"I still think spaghetti is a strange thing to eat on Christmas Eve," Kelly said.

"It's Friday," Justine said.

"Good spaghetti." Kelly put another forkful in her mouth. "I'd eat this any time."

"Eat all you want," Patrick said.

"Service starts in an hour," Justine said.

Kelly just nodded and took another huge bite of pasta.

"Excuse me for a moment, ladies." Patrick pushed back from the table. He went upstairs and changed into a suit and tie. He thought about his conversation with Pastor Daniel a few days before. In a moment, there would be no turning back. He went back downstairs and sat in the living room and listened to the girls talking.

"I can't believe I was so mean to you," Kelly said, "and now you're like my best friend."

"Mrs. Balanteen says it's easy to be mean when you're hurting."

"I didn't think I was hurting that much. It's still hard sometimes. I don't want to miss my dad, but I do anyway. Then I feel guilty because I miss him and he was so mean to my mom."
