Chapter 54

"There would be no need for that," Ezekiel said before Evie could form a reply.

A smile appeared on Evie's face, for once she liked what her husband did.

"Oh come on, I know that my granddaughter would like to spend some time with me," Laura Kings argued.

"I am really sorry madam Laura Kings but I have other matters to attend to, so I can't possibly spend some time with you," Evie said calmly, flashing her a smile that did not reach her eyes.

Laura let out a silent growl, why address her by Laura Kings and not grandmother? Was she trying to show the guests that they don't have a cordial relationship?

Laura heaved deeply, not wanting to say anything rude.

"I understand what you are trying to say Evie but I as your grandmother want to play her duty in your life especially after the exit of your mother, my daughter," Laura added.

Evie dropped her fork on the ceramic plate, she was done being nice to this woman. What was she trying to say? That the both of them had been close since her birth.

"Duty?" Evie snorted.

"Since I was born, I never got to see you, you were never there for me as a grandmother and now you suddenly appear and want me to welcome you with open arms?" Evie yelled, forgetting about the important personalities in attendance.

Juicy rubbed her thigh from under the table, trying to calm Evie down.

Laura Kings was left speechless, her gaze darkened, glaring at Evie who also held her gaze.

Well, she was not very surprised at Evie's actions, she had proved that Sonia was really her mother but she is Laura Kings and she never backs down without a fight.

"I have been working my ass off for many years just to return and make you happy and this is the way you pay me?" Laura asked.

Evie chuckled, a sarcastic one. Why was Laura making her seem like the bad person here?

"Laura Kings, you displaced your position of my grandmother when you married my mom off and said you wanted nothing to do with her so you have no right in my life now," Evie fired back.

"Enough!!" Alaska Owens thundered, indicating for the women to remain shut.

"We are gathered to pay our last respect to Sonia Kings and not to fight," Alaska added.

"It is okay, there are many dignitaries here and I am sure you don't want to wash your dirty linen in public," Alice, who sat across from her , whispered.

Evie heaved deeply, her gaze connected with Ezekiel's and suddenly Ezekiel flashed her a smile.

He was definitely proud of her. Ezekiel liked women who can talk for themselves and stand up to challenges.

The rest of the lunch was spent without any form of fight or argument.

Strolling away from the garden with Juicy beside her, she plucked beautiful flowers.

"You are funny," Juicy broke the silence.

"What do you mean I am funny?" Evie faced her fully and they stopped walking.

"Laura Kings is a very powerful woman and she can go to any length to prove it. Do you think that after this argument, she would back down?" Juicy asked.

"So?"

"Laura Kings is a woman no one wants to be on her bad side, she is very influential and has the world on her palms. What I am trying to say is that you should just try to straighten up things with her," Juicy explained.

Evie chuckled. She sighed and then walked away from her friend.

"I was talking to you Evie," Juicy stated.

Evie halted in her tracks and turned to face her friend again.

"Do you really think I am scared of her, she wouldn't dare lay a finger on me, besides I am legally married to the Owens family so she should let see how things go down well for her," Evie paused and continued,

"Well, I don't think she is that stupid to do anything funny."

With that Evie left the garden leaving her friend surprised. Evie doesn't know what she had gotten herself into.

Evie shut the door behind her and collapsed on her bed, it has been such a long day for her.

She made her way to the bathroom and slid into the tub which she filled with steaming hot water.

She rested her head and before she knew what was happening she slept off.

The next time Evie opened her eyes, she was on her bed, with a drip stand beside her.

Her whole body ached as she tried to remember what happened but her memory was blank, she could not even see clearly.

"Evelynn!!!!!!!!" Someone yelled, slapping her cheeks, she tried to answer but couldn't speak up.

"Evie please say something," another familiar voice echoed but she could not even see the person nor could she say a word.

She tried to open her eyes but it was gradually closing, she tried to force it open but her eyes closed.

Evie opened her eyes again, trying to get a grip of herself.

"Wake up," a deep masculine voice whispered in her ears and she instantly recognized that the voice belonged to Ezekiel.

She tried to sit up on her, but before she could lift a finger, a nurse rushed over to her.

"Don't sit up, lie down," she instructed and Evie obeyed, well there was nothing she could do, her whole body felt sore.

"Do you want to kill yourself?" Alice rushed over to her.

"What were you thinking when you were drowning yourself, I hadn't checked up on you then maybe you would have been dead by now," Juicy fired.

And that was when it hit Evie, she slept off in the bathtub and possibly slipped inside the water making her lose consciousness.

Evie closed her eyes, she tried to speak but she couldn't find the voice to do so.

"It is best you guys should leave her for now, she is still recuperating. I advise that only one person should be allowed to stay with her," the nurse said thanks to the large number of people in Evie's room.

"I would stay with her," Juicy was quick to say.

"I don't think there would be a need for that when I would be staying," Ezekiel said, earning a shocked look from everyone.

Evie's jaw dropped, Alice let out a chuckle, Juicy gasped, while Alaska, Paul and Xander remained unfazed, though they were surprised as well.

"Of course you are allowed to stay with your wife, let us go everyone," Alice urged everyone to leave the room before Ezekiel changed his mind.

Evie did not like where this was going. She would be in the same room with Ezekiel who would be watching over her.

Once everyone left, an awkward silence reigned in the room.

Ezekiel stood beside the window staring at the space while Evie had her eyes glued on him.

He was dressed in a simple white t~shirt which had a few on the upper buttons undone, revealing his muscular chest.

He had loose pants around his waist, Evie's eyes trailed down to his… okay let's not go there.

She liked his thick black hair and felt the urge to run her hands through it. He had a perfect oval face, ocean blue eyes, pointed nose, full pink lips and thick eyelashes.

Oh God!! Why gift a male with this kind of features?

Ezekiel turned his gaze to Evie and she looked away instantly, she did not get to see the smirk that appeared on his face.

He walked up to her and lifted her chin up with one hand and the other one played with her red hair.

"Like what you see, wife?" Ezekiel asked and Evie's face reddened.
