“We can stay here all night, if you like,” Richards continued. Again, silence.

“Your partner was in on this with you.” Richards’ short, flat statement brought Cam’s eyes to his.

“No. He knew nothing about this.” Her voice was raspy from the tension. She cleared her throat and sat up, her elbows on the table.

“Then, you’d better explain the whole thing so we get it straight.”

Richards and O’Brien exchanged glances.

“We’ve got enough here to book you,” O’Brien said. “Get it over with. Make the statement and we can all get some sleep.”

Cam rubbed her forehead and pushed her hair back; a nervous habit. She knew that once she’d asked for a lawyer they couldn’t force her to talk without one present but that it was their form of intimidation to keep trying.

Only silence followed. O’Brien started placing the evidence back in the box.

“Let me talk to her alone.” Shafer stepped out of the corner.
