How it all began......

The dimly lit laboratory buzzed with the hum of equipment. Sterile surfaces gleamed under the harsh fluorescent lights, casting sharp shadows across the room. Dr. Emily Carter, clad in a white lab coat and protective goggles, stood over a steel table. Her hands moved methodically, adjusting the microscope and scribbling notes on her clipboard.

A small, nervous rat scurried in its cage, oblivious to the monumental significance of the experiment it was part of. Dr. Carter glanced at the cage, her face a mask of concentration mixed with a hint of unease.

Dr. Carter said, muttering to herself "Subject 24. Beginning trial three of the experimental antiviral compound GX-12. Date: May 20th, 2024. Time: 06:15 AM."

She carefully extracted the syringe filled with a translucent blue liquid from the sterile container. The rat's beady eyes followed her movements, a reflection of her own rising anxiety.

Dr. Carter said to the recorder "Administering 0.5 milliliters of GX-12. This dosage is hypothesized to inhibit viral replication at a cellular level, potentially neutralizing the contagion in its early stages."

With practiced precision, she injected the compound into the rat's bloodstream. The creature flinched but remained otherwise still, a testament to the meticulous training and care it had received.

Dr. Carter said as she watched intently "Monitoring Subject 24 for any immediate physiological responses. Initial symptoms of infection typically present within the first hour. Key indicators include elevated heart rate, increased body temperature, and erratic behavior."

The minutes ticked by, each one stretching the silence to an unbearable tension. Dr. Carter's eyes flickered between the rat and her notes, capturing every minute detail.

Then Dr. Carter said her voice tinged with hope and fear "If GX-12 proves effective, we could be on the brink of a breakthrough. This could be the key to halting the spread, saving countless lives."

Suddenly, the rat began to tremble, its tiny body wracked with spasms. Dr. Carter leaned in closer, her heart pounding in her chest.

She moved swiftly, enclosing the rat's cage within a secondary containment unit. The rat's movements slowed, and it slumped to one side, breathing rapidly.

As she watched the rat's breathing steadied momentarily, but then it stopped altogether. Dr. Carter's face fell as she realized the gravity of the situation. She turned to the recorder with a heavy heart.

Then Dr. Carter said "Subject 24 has succumbed to the virus. Immediate action required to prevent further contamination. Locking down the lab."

She moved quickly to activate the containment protocols, but as she did, she noticed a small cut on her hand—the result of a broken test tube earlier in the day. Panic set in as she realized the potential for exposure.

Dr. Carter said breathless "Oh no... the virus... it could..."
