"Well, I dare say you will!" the loud and imposing voice of the Earl of Clanford echoed across the room. THE BALL III

Hearing the voice behind her, Madison turned around to meet a young man with blond hair and chocolate orbs staring at her warmly. He raised his hand with it and indeed it was hers.

Looking back up at him she smiled at him “thank you”

“Your most welcome my lady, do you care for a dance”

She didn’t feel like dancing but seeing the look mademoiselle was giving her she obliged.

Moving to the dance floor together with the man they both swayed lightly to the music before he broke the silence.

“I must say you have the most beautiful eyes I have ever seen” he said smiling at her.

“Thank you.” Nobody have ever complemented on her eyes so she felt a little strange, she knew their color was a little peculiar just like her hair but she never saw anything special there.

“I am Ronnie by the way, Ronnie Jamison”

“Jamison?” she muttered finding the name quite familiar.

“Yes, my elder brother is a viscount” she must have heard about him from Glenda.

“Hmmm, I am Madison Salypse”

“How do you do Lady Madison”

“Very well thank you.”

After the dance, he returned her back to her companion before leaving. Madison danced with several men after him, but she didn’t enjoy herself nearly as much as she had with him. He was so nice and funny, one couldn’t help but like him.

He had told her about his trip to Scotland the previous year to catch fishes, he was strangely in love with nature and fishing in particular, he found it trilling and entertaining and he had complemented her saying she was the nicest and most beautiful lady he had talked to all day and in the short time they had talked he was able to make her forget that man.

......

“Good morning”

Jen looked up at Madison who seemed to be in a good mood today, “Good morning”

she stirred her cup of tea leisurely before taking a sip and sinking herteeth in the crispy rolls in front of her with eyes still fixed on Madison but she seemed to have been oblivious as she kept humming lightly and sipping from her own cup of tea.

Last night she had disappeared for some time and she had looked for her allover but she didn’t find her anywhere and sadly she had the worst luck of bumping into a man called Stephen Wilson who was able to wrung his way a dance with her and had troubled her the whole night by sprouting utter nonsense.

“Where were you last night” she causally threw the question at her as she was now playing with her bread.

“At the ball of course”

“I know silly, I mean where in the ball, I couldn’t find you for a while”

And if possible all the happiness on her face disappeared to be replaced by a glooming expression as if a heavy rain had just begun to fall causing the sun to hide behind theclouds.

“I was at the balcony” she pressed her lips tight and this only made Jen more curious. Dropping the cup of tea in her hands she shifted closers to her from across the table.

“And”

“And?” she stared back at her refusing to give anything away

“Come on Madison, it’s all over your face, what happened at the balcony.”

“Fine, and I met the most impudent man of the century who thought all women were shallow minded and I in particular had no sense at all”

Giggling loudly Jen straighten herself and stopped seeing the serious expression on Madison’s face, “you can’t be serious, why you are the smartest person I know”

“Exactly, he found me to be a fool because I was smarter than him”

Scrunching her nose she looked at her dumbfounded. ”explain, am unable to understand what you are saying”

“The man found me to be a fool because I had outsmarted his question and he must have found it infuriating”

”are you sure that was why he thought you a fool” Jen asked quite not convinced.

“Of course, I don’t see any other reason, we were having a good chat before his expression suddenly changed and he stared insinuating that I was just like every other dumb woman he had the misfortune of coming across.

“Did you say anything offensive?” her friend narrowed her eyes at her knowing she had a temper sometimes.

“Absolutely nothing, all we talked about was on my favorite constellation”

“Which is?”

“Orion” Jen plopped both her elbows on the table why giving it a deep thought. ”did you praise it”

“Yes why"

“Maybe he would have had you like another one; some men are quite dominant you see”

“But that is complete nonsense”

“You and I know that but they don’t you see

“Hmmm, what was his name?”

“I have absolutely no idea.”
