Today, they decided to go hunting. In their training schedule, three days of a week were reserved for the hunting.
Bolt and Leo were running on thick grass, chasing a wild boar. They could feel the fresh scent filling their nose. That was the scent of plants, mixed with flowers' fragrance. It was the breath of an untainted forest, full of life and adventure. Smelling the air, made them tremble with excitement.
There were numerous aged trees, whose stretching branches and wide leaves almost covered the sky. Beneath those trees, there were many unidentified shrubs clustering together. Between the spaces of the shrubs, there were roots of aged old trees exposing themselves above the ground.
Suddenly Leo told Bolt that they should stop their chase, both of them stopped. Far ahead in the direction where the wild boar was escaping, Leo's heightened senses picked up a pack of wolves. If they had continued their chase, they would have met that pack of wolves, and then their result would have been miserable. For now, their strength wasn't enough to clash with such a large pack of wolves.
Without powerful senses it was difficult to spot that lurking pack of wolves, only seasoned hunters could notice them in advance from the trails left by them, such as scratches on the trees and clear footprints on the ground. Leo really liked the improved senses, they were too useful, countless times they helped him in avoiding life-threatening situations.
"What a shame to leave that plump boar to those wolves." Bolt was a little disappointed.
"For now, let them have it. When we get stronger, we will kill every single one of them," Leo said. Wolves were the most hated animal among town's people, as they harassed them many times. Many of the town's sheep, goats, and cows were eaten by those wolves.
Leo and Bolt rarely get the chance to hunt these wolves, as they always moved in a pack.
Both of them started searching for another prey. The most common animal found in the forest was a rabbit. So after just a few minutes, they found a rabbit in the clearing, happily munching on the grass unaware of its hunter. Leo and Bolt slowly crept to that rabbit. Suddenly rabbit's ears perked up in alert, it looked around but did not find anything, so it just changed its spot and continued eating.
As soon as the rabbit perked up its ears, Leo and Bolt immediately hid behind a trunk of a large tree. It wasn't them who alerted the rabbit, but it was another hunter.
Leo pointed at a thick bush distance away opposite to them. Bolt looked in that direction, there was a snake thick as an adult's thigh, with a colorful pattern on its body. It looked at the rabbit as it stuck its two-pronged snake tongue out. It seems there are two hunters but a single prey.
Leo whispered in Bolt's ear. "We might get to see a great show." Leo was excited.
There were only question marks on Bolt's face. "What show?! We are going to lose our prey for the second time, how can you be excited?"
"You will see." Leo did not explain further.
Snake waited for a moment. After seeing the rabbit completely engrossed in eating, it slowly came out from the bush in the clearing and swiftly pounced on the rabbit, but before it could reach it, a large shadow fell on the snake. A shrill eagle scream came from above, it dived towards the snake with all its strength gathered on its claws, they pierced inside the thick and hard skin of the snake. Eagle lifted the snake and smashed it violently on the ground, and then pecked its head with the pointy beak that was sharp as a blade. In just a few seconds the snake was dead, its twitching body lay trapped in claws. When the eagle made sure that the snake was dead, it sounded a shrill scream and flew away with it.
Leo had already noticed the eagle circling in the sky, so he expected this. But this scene still shocked him after seeing from such a close distance. Bolt was also shocked, both of them were looking at each other with a wide-open mouths.
Such was the life in the forest, where, in an instant hunter could become prey.
After this short interlude, they started searching for another prey, as the previous rabbit already made its lucky escape in the commotion.
After some time, an unlucky rabbit was lying dead in front of them. Leo skinned it, ripped out all its guts, sliced it into meat straps, and put it in the leather bag on his back, which was smeared with the extract of red-spotted yellow flower to cover the smell.
As they continued moving in the forest, the light was sometimes dim and bright.
Leo's powerful senses again informed him of the faraway pack of wolves, which was getting ready to hunt a herd of antlered deers wandering along a stream. Normal senses would have never been able to observe that scene from such a far distance, but his domain was large enough to cover that distance, his second brain was forming the scene in his mind with the help of his senses.
Leo gestured at Bolt to not make any sound and follow him. They slowly approached that pack of wolves, when they were near enough, Leo chose a large tree and swiftly climbed, Bolt also followed him. Both of them hid behind the dense branches and observed the scene.
The wolves here were much stronger than the wolves that Leo had seen on the Earth. They had stronger muscles, judging from their head and jaws one could tell that they had very powerful bite force.
Wolves gradually split up and approached the deer herd. Some of the wolves even tried to intimidate the deers on the edge. Because of the approaching wolf pack, the deer herd began to panic, and quickly there was chaos in the herd. The deers began to run, some of them even headed in different directions.
The wolves separated as they chased after the antlered deer herd, searching for suitable targets. Those who ran in different directions were getting easily hunted by the wolves.
As wolves split up to chase after those separated deers, Leo looked at Bolt and smiled. "Now this is our chance." For them, it was pretty difficult to hunt wolves as they were always in a pack.
They chose a group of four wolves chasing behind a deer. They caught up to them and stood in front. Seeing something disturbing their hunt, wolves directly attacked them without any hesitation.
Bolt was holding a heavy wooden club in his hand, and Leo was as usual ready with his fists. It wasn't their first time fighting with the wolves, so they knew how to deal with them. Two wolves pounced at Bolt, and the other two at Leo.
Bolt swung his heavy club at them like a batter, both wolves got thrown back at the same time. The one which got hit lightly immediately sprang back up and again pounced at him, this time Bolt swung the club from above at wolf's head, it was a clean hit.
'Bam!'
Wolf felt dizzy, it felt the world around spinning, after a few moments it fainted. When the second wolf came pouncing at him Bolt handled it in the same way.
On the other side, Leo used his fists, simultaneously they fell on the incoming wolves' heads like a hammer.
"Boom!"
Their skulls cracked, they dropped to the ground faster than when they pounced at him.
"Thud!" The ground near him trembled slightly. Both wolves died instantly.
They cut the four wolves' heads, and then they searched for the next group.
In this way, they killed two more groups, a total of nine wolves.
But after this, wolves noticed their killed brethren, they started howling, calling for wolves to gather.
"I guess this it then, they found out very quickly." Leo was a little disappointed.
"It's okay, we killed plenty," Bolt said. "We have to leave before they gather." There was a little urgency in his voice. Even though they were strong enough to handle four or five wolves, the whole pack was impossible for them, they cannot handle so many wolves at a time.
Just then his second brain informed him of another incoming danger. With a bitter smile, Leo looked at Bolt. "I don't think we need to care about these wolves anymore."
Bolt frowned. "What do you mean?"
"That tiger is coming in this direction. I think this whole commotion must have attracted it." Leo said with a helpless expression.
This was their second encounter with the tiger. The first time Leo noticed it, they were just at the outskirts of the forest, so as soon as Leo spotted it, they retreated out of the forest, but now they were pretty far inside.
"I had a feeling in the morning that today was going to be unlucky for us, and that is turning out to be true." Bolt's face was also bitter.
Just a few moments after Leo informed the howling wolves turned quiet. Wolves have quite good instincts for danger, they immediately started fleeing from there.
Not just the wolves, but many other animals were fleeing from that area.
Leo and bolt also started fleeing, they ran in the direction of the mountain ahead. After some time they should have gone pretty far, but Leo noticed that the tiger was still coming in their direction.
Leo thought it must be a coincidence that the tiger and they were going in the same direction.
Just to be sure, Leo changed the direction they were going. After some time his second brain informed him of the tiger also changing its direction same as them.
"Fuck, what's going on?" Leo was very confused. He was sure that, the tiger hadn't noticed them, because they left from that area when it was still far away.
Leo informed this Bolt. "Damn, today really is an unlucky day, I should have listened to my instincts." Bolt murmured to himself in regret and anger directed at himself.
Both of them started running even faster.
Slowly the distance between them and the tiger grew shorter and shorter.
Intermittent bangs of the tiger's heavy stepping on the ground resounded closer and closer. The ground beneath their feet trembled, together with the sound of breaking branches. Same as them many other animals were also fleeing for their survival by their side.
As the distance between them and the tiger grew closer, they were approaching the foot of the mountain.
