Aptitudes

It was a few days later when my dad came up to me. He was holding his hand behind his back.

Without a word he pulled his hand close to my face. In it, a book titled "Magic Aptitudes" was given to me.

The price of books is sky high as paper is an expensive product. It's a testament to our wealth that we have such a complete library. Magic books are even more expensive. Even simple knowledge about magic is expensive for that matter.

After a few words of exchange Michael left me to my own little world. With anticipation written on my face, I slammed the front cover open.

Page one. Aptitudes Basics.

"Aptitudes are simply a messurement. A measurement of your suitability towards one kind of magic. Everyone has one or more aptitudes but they are so minimal that it's irrelevant. To be able to cast spells one must have a strong connection to an element."

The rest of the page talked about what a strong connection is. Just a strong aptitude.

He flipped the page and arrived at a page. The title was "Fire aptitude"

I read on with interest…

"An aptitude to fire is usually held by someone with a angry persona. Someone who you can easily get angry. Sometimes pride is associated with fire as well.

Having an aptitude for fire gives you a range of possibilities. Fire, Combustion, and a multitude of different magic types can be unlocked.

If the rare case of a water and fire Mage appears they can heat and cool water inside someone's body. If a earth mage with fire aptitude is around, they can use lava spells. It's very rare for someone to have more then one type of aptitude but if it happens you can get multiple types of spells."

This page had a lot of information. Powerful spells can be used in tandem with other elements. Truly interesting.

The page wasn't done yet so I quickly went back to reading.

"Although it's true that a Flame Mage can use all types of fire magic, it's usually the case that they can only use a couple well. Each element has sub elements. As stated earlier. Combustion is a sub element of Fire Magic. It's best for a mage to quickly find out what they are good at."

I flipped the page. None of this matters to me anyways. I don't even know if I can use magic. I'll worry about a sub element when I get to that point.

"Water Magic."

The list went on and on. In the next 3 or so hours I had covered every type. There were many.

'Earth, Fire, Wind, Water, Frost, Lightning, Light, Plant, Space, Time, Enchantment, There was certainly a lot of them.'

After reading about all the elements he got to a red page.

"Illegal Elements"

... illegal elements huh. I can only imagine the power of powers deemed illegal.

"The following elements aren't allowed to exist. They are all evil in nature and against the people of this country."

He flipped the page.

'Shadow, Demonic, Blood, and Mind.' Not a very wide range. Only 4.

That was until I flipped the page…

A skull was plastered on the page. Around the skull a wide variety of symbols lay.

"Death. This is an element too powerful for any one person to hold. Someone of the Death element can use the bane of all life. Necromancy. On top of that all, Death Mages can gain Mana through Soul Absorption. Death Mages can use any kinds of necromancy and bone spells. Many death mages have been seen to use Shadow or Blood magic aswell. The point is Death Mages usually have access to other Elements. One thing is for certain, Death mages are evil. Few Death Elemental Mages have been born, but all have made history. Death Mages are power hungry, cold, angry people. Most have a grudge with humanity. The last Death Mage was killed a thousand years ago by Arthur The Lightbringer."

Wow. Just wow. A element that can access so many other elements… it's no wonder it's illegal.

I soon began to look at the images surrounding the skull.

'Plauge, Decay, Soul, Summoning, and Bone.' The subtypes of death. Each having numerous strengths and weaknesses.

"Dinner!" I heard Maria yell from the kitchen of our house.

"Coming mom!" I yelled out a reply, closed my book and went to go eat. I pushed magic to the back of my mind but didn't allow it to leave entirely.

"I want to be a mage!" I have found my calling in life…
