John had spent half an hour asking Maria questions about her method of conserving Energy and how she had found out about it, but since that was not his goal, it was time to change the subject.
"So, tell me, Maria. Why did you choose to come to my base? You didn't seem like the type to seek protection."
Maria was caught off-guard by John's question and she was taken aback by its bluntness. "Well, I had nowhere else to go."
"Don't lie to me, Maria. There were a lot of places to go. Besides, you were likely the first person on Earth to set up a refuge. I'm sure you could've managed something on your own."
"I don't know what to tell you. You were the first person I came across who seemed like they could handle the situation."
John shook his head. "Still, I don't buy it. You didn't even ask me for a position of authority."
Maria sighed, knowing John wouldn't let it go.
